level 9 - Freeport 1 to sprauque

As soon as the Rheinland ships appear I am usually torn to shreds, a few times i can survive this, but it seems like i will never succeed in destroying they enemy. I suspect part of my problem is that i am piloting a freighter, and my firepower is not enough to compensate for the total lack of maneuvering. I have had little trouble fending off corsaire, etc. attacks in bretonia long enough to hit trade lanes/ jump gates, but here it seems i must fight to the death.

does anyone have any suggestions on tactics?

You must be using the wrong type of shield.
The rheinland fighters is so slow, they can only out manuever their own freigther class ship, the humpback. I finished the game until the last missions using dromedary.

Just get close enough to them and they have problem targetting you. If you are near a friendly base , then you can fly around the base and confuse them.
