Safety all depends on who you're hostile with. I've found mining rather pointless, a lot faster to just buy/sell but silver in colorado seems to be a good newbie mining spot.

Best mining Sites....Depends what you're looking for.

For Quick Time turnaround, mine Silverton in Colorado, and sell in Manhattan.

For more profit (and alot more time spent travelling from the mine to your selling destination)

Mine Diamonds in Dresden or Omega-11, Sell them in Leeds or New Tokyo
Mine Artifacts in Omecron Gamma, Sell them in Manhattan (most of the Capital Planets...eg: New London, New Berlin etc) have reasonable prices, but Manhattan's highest on my list (at least, for now)

At least, that's the best I've found so far.

It takes less time, and less risk (assuming your mining in a Freighter....it takes much less time, but there's a lot less profit if you do it in a fighter) to buy from one of the stations close to the mining zone.

Mining diamonds in Dresden is probably safer than Omega 11...I tried that for a while, but stopped when I found that server crashes wiped my cargo. Mining is more dangerous than trading where server crashes are concerned, but I guess you have nothing to lose except time.

I was able to fight ouff or outrun all the NPC hostiles in the area easily in a Valkrie/Falcon with Class 6 weapons...the area is not terribly dangerous. And in some places diamonds/silver drops every other shot.

My shield and engine are the ones you get when you start out, I had no money, only 2K credits and I was flying around.

Well I figure, this whole Skippy enemy not letting me shoot them bit is kinda stupid, so I'll go do some mining.

Well I wonder over to some Ice Field, and find out that Ice is turned into water (well duh) and so I go to find some other place thats more profitable (BTW Im in a Startracker right now)

So I wonder around, eventually I get to Omega 7. Sooo... I got to Omega 11 to buy diamonds, only to my supprise that I find out, that the minute I get there my hull explodes thanks to the stupid Star.

So.... you know IM all easy with this, but instead of doing THAT again, I got to Stuttingrad or whatever its name is, and I look around for wrecks (the whole point of this is to prove that you dont have to fight or mine or trade to get money)

I find a wreck, and shoot it. To my luck, 20 artifacts, 10 paralyzer rockets, and 2 level 9 weapons fall out.

OOOO I say.

I pick it all up, and run for the nearest base and make somewhere close to 100,000 credits.

So, Level 1, I now have enough money to buy a level 12 ship.

Kinda sad
