Get a light fighter for the race

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Get a light fighter for the race

I was going insane. I am an gamer of the 80s so I am getting up there. Get the light fighter. I traded in my heavy fighter and during my second run I actually was ahead of him the whole way. Very simple. Keep your speed up, point to the way points and you will get it.

First time I beat the race, I was flying a Cavalier... It took 2 tries, but I did it...

Beat in in a Rhino. I had that ship WAY too long.

Deffinitely don't try it in a Clydesdale...

Post Fri Mar 28, 2003 4:43 pm

I thought all ships had the same speed?

Thought wrong?

Post Fri Mar 28, 2003 5:07 pm

Speed yes, but manoeuvrability varies drasticaly and some of the turns between those rings a bit on the tight side - especially in a freighter. I tried many, many times in a Clydesdale and eventually had to switch to a light fighter and won first time.

Heh, I stuck it out in a Clydesdale and did it on the 4th try. It was the last couple of gates before you have to start dropping c/m for the cruise disruptors that were really proving to be the hardest; because you couldn't see the next gate coming out of the one you were currently going through... that made it really tough... but getting familiar with the course ahead of time, without the "pressure" of the race itself, helped me out a lot there.

I've tried it in several ships....

My problem with it, is not being accurate enough to control the ship to go thru the rings.....

But the first time I went thru it...It actually took me about 20 tries...I was about to throw the game out the window.

I went back and bought that fighter that's available on the hood...and squeaked by....Still hate that mission.

However, I have restarted the SP campaign...and currently am flying that fish looking heavy Bretonian fighter thing....Made it thru on the first try....barely....That **** kept trying to ram me throughout the whole dang course....Pushed me off course onse...and had to swing back around....It was a few rings toward the end, where he stops to apparantly activate the weapon plats...then I just shot by him. I just unloaded all of my countermeasures....never got hit with a cruise disrupter....

I would love to go back and just pummell Hovus.....(I'm not a violent man...but JEEZE he ticked me off...)

A word of advice:

For the Race with Hovis: Buy the smallest fighter and strip it of all equipment except a countermeasure launcher and 5 countermeasures. Then go race. With some careful steering, you should be able to beat him every time.

Oh -- and make sure you have enough credits to buy all your stuff back or you'll be screwed.

Exactly. The only reason this mission causes any trouble at all is that people think, reasonably enough, that they need to get ahead of Hovis to win. Behind him is the best place to be. You won't get knocked off the track. You can take the rings easily as you please. Near the end you'll pass him and win because it's rigged that way. I'm willing to bet the DA folks are baffled that people have such trouble with this mission since they rigged it in the player's favor. What they forgot is that people don't know that (unless they read this forum) and so they cause themselves to lose the race before Hovis even has a chance to throw it.

I beat the course second try in a heavy fighter (cavalier I think it was). Easy as pie.

Use STRAFE (A & D) through the turns...

Post Sat Mar 29, 2003 5:15 pm

Well... you're completely right. Strafes, Fighter and this is all what it takes to win the race. I didn't had to sell equipment and stuff. I took the first place in first try. It's nothing difficult.

(...) what? worlds are dissapearing? ummm... yes, it could be my fault (...)

I have a hard time believing people actually had trouble on the race mission. The first time I played through Singleplayer I beat Hovis my first time in a Defender. The second time I played through Singleplayer I beat Hovis the first time once again, but this time in a Crusader and I was ahead of him the entire time. I had no problems flying through the rings, even in my big hulking Crusader. I thought it was too easy, even the first time I ever attempted...
