Mission 8: "Potent ship reccomended"

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Mission 8: "Potent ship reccomended"

Hello,

I got stuck in mission 8: I have a Hawk ship, with medium level guns and only the Windstalker missle. The mission objective is to Shoot down the weapons platforms, but I can't knock them down without dying. And my missles do not seem to do much damage.

Anyway, there is no way to "back out" of the mission, and then go scramble for cash to upgrade weapons, to say a Torpedo. Anybody have any suggestions?
Otherwise, I have to replay about an hour, just to get back to a decent ship, with enough funds before mission 8. I guess I should save more often, eh? ;-)

Yep, you do have to go back to your previous save game. If your guns aren't powerful enough, you won't be able to destroy the weapon platforms in time to make it. I failed the mission 3 times before finally going back to my previous save game and buy a dragon (6 guns).

Furthermore, after mission 8, the Kusari will hate you. You won't have a chance to fly peacefully in Kusari space. The stronger ship you have, the better your chance of survival after mission 8. So go get yourself something better than a Hawk.

why are you still flying about in a hawk anyway

always get the best ship money can buy and thou shalt have no problems...

oh, missles suck especially low level ones, get torpedoes, they do much more damage for the price that you pay for them

Well, don't bother with the Star Killer torpedoes -- they did bugger all to that platform...

I found that a Barracuda, loaded with two Lavablade MkIII's, two Windstalker Missiles, and two Stunpulses (unsure what model) handled the weapons platform fairly well (but not greatly) -- but I did manage to do it.

Mind you, I was after a replacement ship ASAP!! (and fortunately I waited till getting to the Osiris!! WOW!!)

I used the Hawk until I picked up the Anubis.

I liked the Hawk.

some how..me thinks a Dragon would have been MUCH better more weapons cant be bad right?

Thank you for all the suggestions.

What I have done so far, is to go back, and instead of purchasing the Hawk, I purchased another ship (clydesdale?) and decided to do some trading until I got up a sizable amount of cash. I'm going for about ~200K or so, so that I can outfit a better ship. Now then, my "Goal" ship is the Heavy Barracuda with a torpedo launcher on it, then go for mission 8. Now, I'm in Kusari space, and cannot go back to Liberty space AT ALL. Is there a better ship that I should purchase? (I know there are several, but I would like to know for this stage in the game :-) )
And, also, where could that ship be gotten?

Thanks again!

I flew this mission with the freighter that the Lane Hackers sell. More guns are better.

I had a Hawk, 4 guns(hate the missles) I just parked myself inside the Cap ship birth , seemed the platforms had a hard time lining up a shot on me. Killed both no problem, didn't even use shield batteries....

It seems best to ignore Juni whenever possible and get some cash. I have even "declined" missions right to her face and she was still waiting for me. You can't decline many missions, but some you can, with no ill effects it seems.

As far as getting more firepower, I was in the Liberty Heavy fighter until I was on the run from Liberty, bought the Flying Fish JUST until I could get my hands on the most wonderful ship in Freelancer: The Dragon. I finished the campaign in the Dragon with the best shield it could hold and a potent weapon loadout.

The Anubis is a good option when you can get it, in the meantime, get a Dragon....

Me no gun

I tried those missions with a hawk, got up to the one where I had to kill the nomad battleships and thought screw it, this is getting too hard, went back and got a dragon, two swappable sets of outcast level 6 guns (dragoon 3 for rhinelander's molecular shields and pyros 3 for kusari positron) and blazed right through those missions.
Hint: Trade while in Kusari, can get some very profitable runs and everyone should be neutral.

The barracuda is better than the dragon. I acquired it before even getting into the Kusari systems. ITs the same as dragon with bit more cargo. worth 71k and its very good

Baracuda seems to be a bit more nimble (might just be my imagination) and it holds 45 cargo to Dragon's 40. Otherwise they are identical. There's not any real reason you couldn't get thru Mission 8 with a Hawk (some of the missions AFTER that could be more of a problem, however).

The Starkiller Torp will be the only one you CAN have until after the SP missions (During the story missions, you land on the one base you can buy the SunSlayer, but you won't be high enough level to get it). It's better than nothing. If you didn't do any damage with the torp, odds are you didn't hit the platform with one. A little known fact about torps and missles is that they will NOT track stationary objects (weapons platforms, battleships, bases, etc.) You must be lined up perfectly to hit them from any distance (use the GO TO command to get lined up, drop out of cruise and fire the torp or missle).

Missles at this level in the game are a waste of money....just get some better guns. Personally, I think missles are like throwing money at someone to blow them up, but that's just my opinion.
