Beating mission 3

Ok, I think the mission is #3 that I'm on. It's when you escort the ships to a research base. I escorted them then I killed the three rheinlanders. I got the help from the guys in the navy or whatever. I get the call that the research base id under attack. I go their and have tried lot of times but they always kill me. I have a rhino for my ship. How can I beat this. Any strategies or anything?

The first thing you should do is get rid of the freighter. Any fighter (but especially a heavy fighter) is better. More guns and more agile. I was in the crusader at the time and while it was a little hairy at times i got through ok.

OK, would a defender be good? How can I et a better ship Will I have to go back to an old save and redo this WHOLE mission? Can I just go back a little to somwhere I can buy a ship at?

A defender or even a patriot would be great.

Assuming the mission isn't one where you dock at bases a few dozen times while the mission's going on, then you'd need to load a save from before you start the mission, and buy a fighter.

I managed it with a freighter. It may be slow but has a lot of guns and a good balance of shield and hull busters will knock them down like flies.
