Videos on Main page

When people post videos for server news it makes the front page take ages to load, couldnt a place in the gallery be made for videos?

I think we can look into that but the videos shouldn't make a difference as far as load times because they are not set to start automatically. You have to click on the play button to start them.

If they are causing a problem we'll have to look into doing something about it.
I didn't notice any difference in load time the front page load for me the same. Page Load Time: 0:140

I too have been noticing increased page load times... they aren't horrible, but perhaps it has something to do with the background music...

Edit- and the videos start automatically every time I go to the main page, whether I click on them or not. Is this a browser setting issue?

I don't think it's in the browser settings but the browser that you are using.
The code I used has autostart=false
so they should not start automatically nor should you be hearing any music until the video is started.

yea videos do start automatically, im using opera and when i create pages with video i use this and it seems to work browser side '<param name="autoStart" value="0">'

if i gallery could be made where for the thumb it could be the first frame in the vid

in the end the videos are still submitted news... just to move them to a gallery which isnt views by most ppl on LR is against the purpose of the news and the video
and i think many ppl would simply stop creating this fabulous clips about FL

It does depend on what browser you use and yes videos can increase load time.

If load times get to bad, people will just stop comign to TLR, so that is soemthing to also take into consideration.

You may want to try another browser. IE6 loads in about 11 seconds

i use opera loads in about 6, but then it loads the video which makes scrolling slow, instead of using flase to stop auto play try using 0

often the browsers use different code to do the same stuff

so there might be the chance to add an additional line of code which tells opera to be a good browser and stop loading the movie

I upgraded to the latest version of Opera 9.1 added the parameter <param name="autoStart" value="0"> and the video's still start automatically in Opera they do anyway.
Any ideas? or suggestions?

Update:
I took the video's off the front page.
They can still be launched in your default video player or downloaded so that people can still enjoy them.

I hope this makes everyone happy now!

An 11 second load time with a broadband connection? That is not fast by any means.

broadband? that can mean many things, people in US or other places get a 8mb+ downspeed

in UK max most can get is 2 unless your a buisness
