Question

This is a small something that's been bugging me. When there are new messages in a forum, it gets a little icon next to it and the topic icons are starred. What I'd like to know is the mechanism by which these topics are marked "read" and thus the icon disappears, is it time based or what?

Those starred topics are topics which:
Contains new posts since the last time you logged on.


So you don't have to actually read them for the star to dissapear.

I know, but sometimes I close the window, open a new one and come back immediately and the marks are gone, sometimes I wait quite a long time and they're still there.
