Single Game Selection and Viewing Path Needed?

I don't think mixing in Dungeon Seige news with Freelancer news on the same home page will work in the long run. I assume that the current setup is just for starters.

I think it would be better to allow visitors to fork off and down exclusive paths for DS, SL and FL right at the beginning. You might want to add links in the margin to jump from game area to game area.

<Edit>

Also, if the idea is to broaden FL's appearance / appeal to other games like to post news on recent releases and such, then the home page definitely needs to change over to a "what's news" one-liner format and link to other areas that are more specifically directed to a given game.

Besides, like GE already said, the DS area needs to be themed in a sort of blood red color and is not very supported by FL deep space blue theme.

<Edit2>

Try as I might, when using Firefox, the customize view doesn't work so that the DS games are not added to my view on the home page.

<Edit3>

Hmmm. There must be a time delay. I just refreshed again on the home page and this time, all is as was planned. So never mind Edit 2.

@indy How about a chainmail background with some blood? I can give it a try.

Yeah. Chain mail. or a medieval armorer's shop or something. Since the official DS site is flooded in blood red, some kind of echoing of that color scheme probably would be more effective.

if you're gonna start branching off and splitting TLR down the middle, i'm strongly against it. not until there's a thriving community that supports the fps, splitting TLR down the middle just wont achieve anything.

all you end up is one half of an apple full with the juices and the other totally empty.

what im suggesting is, before you do any kind of major splitting, have a community that is really into the game first. for now, if everyone thinks it'll work out, have the dungeon forums as they are. build up a community first.
i dont think i'd enjoy coming onto TLR homepage given a choice to go to the DS (2 forums) or the lancers (some 20 forums). it makes me feel like DS were given better treatment of sorts, being given such .. importance from such an early stage.

if you want to preserve game themes, of course, you could design different wallpapers for the DS forums, to be displayed only when users come up to the DS sections of the site, which i believe is what indy mentioned.

That's exactly what I mean kimk. I made a first version, and it looks pretty cool

As for the rest of your post: It's only one day after the first changes. Give us a chance to implement things one at a time! It's not we click once and everything is changed in an instant!

Kimk, I am starting to sense a possiblity that you don't like the idea of covering dungeon siege......

Post Tue Nov 09, 2004 10:05 am

I am assuming that the changes need to be implemented over time and that what is being shown currently is meant to get things going but not meant to be permanent. .... You mean you can't just "click" and make it so [j/k

It probably is too soon to split out to different game sites. BUT..... you may get to a delicate balance sooner than you think. The more numerous DS news becomes, the more you will be confronted with determining which takes precedence as you present news on the current home page because everything scrolls vertically. SOMETHING has to be the topmost and the other has to take second place. I think that the homepage will have to be changed to make it possible to present to show more than one "headliner" in a designated quadrant of the home page or something like that.

The Criminal Add On to the Equalizer V Mod, for example, is pushed down well below the added items for the DS news. It'd be nice if we could see both sets of updates on the first look at TLR so that I'd know my choices of where to go.

This is the kind of critisism (sp?) that is usefull. You have a good point there. I'm sure BP and Big E will discuss this and see if it's possible.

These kind of comments are much more usefull than the "i don't like you covering DS" ones. Thanks Indy

The best way to do that would probably be to utilise a column format on the front page. This would allow for two (or more) distinct updates to be shown at the same time, and minimise scrolling. Alternatively, TLR could opt for a "titles only" presentation, in which a simple click on a title would open another page with more details on the selected news item.
