TLR main page pics overload

I have ADSL and the main page takes a good 20-40 seconds to load if theres no uncached images, hate to think what its like for anyone on 56k still.

Just scrolled down the main page{Opera screen size of 11*8} of about 30 pages nearly all full of large jpegs, a little over weight.

Hmm thats weird, I'm on 56k and it doesnt take all that long to load(Its not customised btw)

sw - they maybe in your cache, if you go to start, control panel, internet options (this is if you have control panel set in classic view, and not category view!) and then under teh general tab you will see 'temporary internet files' - if you delete the files it will get rid of them. Then you can try the main page again and see how long it takes

Hmm yea I forgot about the cache...blah and I still have to write computerstudies

Something else I've been wondering about...when I come to tlr...I've got several shortcuts to different places on the site, well when I click on them...some of them loads from the cache, but others don't, why does that happen?

We were concerned about people still using dial up connections, so, I asked several people how long does it take for the news/main page to load.

Q: "How long does it take for the news page to load for you."
A: "About a minute."
Q: "Do you think that's too much time, I could stop putting images in the news."
A: "Don't stop adding images, that's what makes it so interesting."

Decision: The images stay...
Also just for your information the customize script has been disabled.

56k users can always block the images from loading and then open them in a new window if they wish.

@esky, do the newbies know that. i didnt and im a vet. how about instead of being flippant, you could do something about it.

plus now we have someone who wants to stick 20 news items in one post, making my life great fun because in the customise menu i've BLOCKED mod news and everything else that i care nothing about, but some genius slaps it all under Freelancer instead of mods. I know it takes a few minutes more but how about being nice and using some kind of picture restriction, you impose it on the forums why not on the front page? that or use one of the glorious thumbnail scripts that are out there?

while im on about the front page, who's the mad hatter who thinks we need to know what games are out at the moment, charts etc.? someone's having delusions of IGN

First of all, I wasn't being flippant and secondly, how am I supposed to know that you guys don't know how to block images? As for doing something about it, what do you recommend? I can't reach out from Australia and change everybody's settings you know . Still, I *am* feeling helpful today... *Goes and creates new thread*

ok, maybe flipant wasnt the right choice of words, but just discarding a request to maybe hang back on bazillions of pics per news item seemed fair to me. To then say that maybe the visiters should deal with it themselves.

in a gromit styled way, i suggest:

* why not put a size limit in per pic and maybe a limit of no more than 2 pics per news item.

* actually work with customise so that tops have the right heading instead of dumping all news into one post.

* cut back on the post count on the front page. 5 - 10 is fine surely. We're loading a dozen pics for news posts that have been and gone already. As i cant currently block mod pics im getting mod team banners from every post

* do we really need mod team banners. I can understand the need to draw attention to it but surely a text link would work just as well. Images brighten up posts but we're looking like a geocities site on the frontpage, just as many damned graphics as the serven can manage.

i know there's adjustments coming, and i know that feedback is apreciated, so here's my ideas before the work starts.

As i cant currently block mod pics im getting mod team banners from every post Well, see now we have had people complain their information was sliding off the front page too quickly so we solved it by adding the space. 6 one, half dozen the other on this. Chalk this up to can't please everyone?

Images brighten up posts but we're looking like a geocities site on the frontpage, just as many damned graphics as the serven can manage. last time I check Geocities had pop-ups and advertisements all over the place. won't find and of that here. And in the past 3+ years I can count on one hand how often this site has been down. Again, not even close to GeoCities results. The graphics for the most psrt you speak of are static anyway and shouldn't ne an issue since they load from your cache most of the time.

i know there's adjustments coming, and i know that feedback is apreciated, so here's my ideas before the work starts. keep 'em coming

Were doing the best we can to make TLR a better community for everyone.
We are basically unlimited in bandwidth, have enough ram, processor speed and connection speed is good and the host is going to upgrade again soon...Hopefully we wont be down for very long this time.
By the way your getting all this for free if you haven't noticed...
We are more of less limited in what we can cover, it takes allot of time to add all that content to the site, so for now we are going to add slowly but hopefully we will be able to cover at least one other space game in the near future...

"And who's the mad hatter posting bazillions of pics"
Duh I don know

lmao

By the way Arcon, we can understand peoples points of views, but at the same time - we cannot take your view discounting all others either.

47 thats nearly half 100 pictures in ONE NEWS POST.

i dont want to say overkill but its freaking overkill

and if you cant please all the people with news post count, why not add the feature to the customise page? if i can choose the number of posts in a forum thread, i should be able to choose the number of posts on the front page.
