A censorship issue...

Why is j-e-r-k censored? It's not always pejorative, unlike "crap" or "asshole" for example.

Just wondering...

Thank you for pointing out more words we need to censor

This site is labelled with ICRA. That's because kids visit this site. If they want dirrty stuff, they can go somewhere else! Read this, maybe you'll understand it better!

wow! i think these people are actually doing something worthwhile, i think that there is no reason a website like this should allow any kind of questionable lanquage, there is no need.

no biggie, anyways i respect your determantion to keep us kids clean but your to late besides when im mad i spray pant swear words all over my room

Hmmm...

I don't think I made myself clear the first time. I have no issue with censorship. I certainly understand why you do it. However the j-word is not always a bad word. I understand that it is sometimes but there are many uses for it that are in no way "questionable" like using it to describe a short, sharp pull or tug. Even when it is used in a negative way it's relatively soft (see my above post for harsher words). By censoring it you run the risk of making a post seem harsher than it really is; people won't neccessarily assume that the censored word begins with j, more likely they'll assume it was some other four-letter word. This is obviously not a good thing.

I hope that this makes more sense. Of course ultimately it is up to the Mods to decide.

i found that particular example when i tried to post the phrase "knee-j e r k response"

besides, it's hardly bad language is it? the word j e r k? and it's a perfectly acceptable noun and verb (and part of an adjective too) in everyday use. yet other words like cr+p and sh*t etc don't get censored? you'll notice that I, as many others do, censor things myself.

I do not swear at all (the only "bad" word I use is "bastard" ), and even I do not feel that the "j-word" should be censored, however it is not the sort of word that should be usued in polite company. For that reason, I assume that Bargib has decided to play it safe and censor it. Can you really fault him for doing so on what is after all, a family site?

In the US, that word can be used in a rather explicit way so I can understand why it might be a filtered word. It's just a bit surprising when you try to use the word for the first time and it gets censored.

It isn't as if one is unable to express a thought effectively without using that word anyway so it is really no big deal imo.

then why do other words get rhough then?

Post Tue Oct 05, 2004 12:23 pm

Bad filtering, my thought. Needs fixing for sure but I doubt that we'll see any change until after Bargib is able to migrate us over to the new forums which is when now? Last I heard sometime when FL 3 comes out.

Filtering is only so good. Getting around it has been done. The substituting of letters, numbers, P0rn for an example. If some one wants to use the word in question, hey would probally find a way around it.

Censoring is a nice way to filter words, but still moderation is still the best. since words are text, there is always going to be words resembling the meaning. the posibility is almost limitless. having to behave thyself still the best bet.
