Old threads = READ only

ok the old threads are well and good for info, but how about creating a Read only section for any post over 6 months old except for stickies. That would stop the rampant grave digging going on lately.

Yes, I agree, I was suprised to see Warlord Bob's post when a n00b dug up a ancient thread, digging up old threads has to stop ......

thats not a bad idea

Edit- I've had a chat with my friend who is the owner of his own boards and he doesn't think this is possible, what i would recommend is that when somebody asks a common question that has been answered previously, somebody else then answers it and it's then both Locked and stickied. This would take up a lot of space but it would work

There are certain limitations with ASP, but I suppose that it is possible.

@Growserpaul.

We have done that - in editing it would take the first 10-15 pages of forum threads though - no joke - literally hundreds of threads would be stickied.

So we had dedicated threads for newbies to post simple questions where they would get an answer - STILL they didn't bother. Then i made a kinda "knowledge" base thread - with links to each page of the two newbie quesiton threads (both have over 700 posts in each one), with links to the pages, which had a description of what we had gone through on the page so that they could find it simply. STILL they ignore all this and ask the same flippin quesitons week in week out, and dig up old threads to add "Thanks" or "It doesn't work for me" kinda thing. Its annoying simply because there is probs about 80 hours of work in posting answers in those threads by me...........and yet the flippin ignore it al and get arsey if you tell them to spend 5 mins bloody looking

A feature that WOULD be beneficial is that if threads could have the search done by topic only - and not by content. that way you could pull up threads directly relevent to your search, and not all the threads that mention it once or twice in a passing sentance etc....

That way the search function would just be alot more relevant to some areas - especially in the modding sense - as they could find a thread about capship handling - without pulling up 40 threads that match capship or handling in one post of 100....

If it was an option of the search function it would be cool - either search by topic, or search by keywords etc..

Chips we made a small forum as well for TRM it only has 100 posts so far so it isnt unbearable yet but we have a section for Archives where we move old post to it and lock them for read only. Now with a Forum of this magnitude it would be hard unless you have a mass lock and move button like invision. But its just a thought

how bout you disable going back 6 months.... save on the search thing!

Post Sun Sep 12, 2004 9:00 am

6 months ain't that bad, there were posts here from 2000.

@ Aravis - What you mean is making one forum where the permissions for members and visitors is set to READ ONLY - no edit, post, reply etc...read only. Any thread moved to that forum will immediately become a "read only" thread - thereby being archived.

not a bad idea at all that
