Patenting forums

I think there should be a section in the forums for patenting names. It gets too messy with ppl using such similar names so i think it should be announced on a specific forum somewhere before a mod and such is released. If a mod or whatever the name is for isnt released within a week or so than the patent would be removed. This way there would be less confusion such as: Freelancer Explorer and Freelancer Xplorer... Kinda annoying aint it? Just a suggestion

Hmmm, I understand your point, it can get really messy with Locutus2004 running rampant, while Locutus2000 just adheres the rules.

BUT, patenting names is a bit overboard, don´t you think, it would give out an entirely wrong message to future forum users, like: °This is Mine, and you can not touch it° I think TLR strives for an adult community based on individual naming, and respecting the names the individuals give themselves, instead of childish, egotistical °whats mine is mine and you cannot touch it° attitude.

i dont mean like that, i mean something to declare a particular name so ppl will check there before making their mod so they know that they arent takin someone's name. So if the ppl that made Freelancer Xplorer had seen something that said that Freelancer Explorer was in use than they could either proceed with the name or to save confusion they would think of something new. Not saying that someone CANNOT take it, but saying that once a person has claimed it than ppl would always look there and make sure they arent steppin all over someone elses work. However if the person that claimed it has gone a week without a mod or anything under there name, than it would be removed from the forum so that ppl could go ahead and use a similar name without worrying about the confusion.

Ahhh like that, so sorry I misread you old chap.

Well yeah, but basicly this is being taken care of amongst the modders themselves, they have an unwritten or at least semi written set of Rules to which they adhere, it´s kinda like a writers code to writing books, when it DOES seem to be a missmatch of names, well they can always blame the ol´ mr. miss/communication for that, but not to worry this rarelly ever happens, so the need for a patenting forum is really negatable.

Oh and btw, on the legal side, it is forbidden to register/patent anything with the name freelancer in it, since those rights belong to Microsoft/Digital Anvil, this means ANY registration of the names other then via MS or DA is absolutely forbidden and can get TLR into a whole lot of Trouble, and that is something the staff here wants to avoid at all costs, since it will highly likely mean that TLR will be closed down. And I don´t think you, or me, or anyone else for that matter would wish for that to happen.

Hope this explanation is to your satisfaction, if not ask and I´ll see what else I can think of

lol,

Its down to people and personalities. Xplorer - i didn't know of it to be honest, and i can see why it might be confusing. I will have a look for it to see what it is.

However, I cannot think of any others at the moment. For most mods, you try to steer clear of existing mods names - cause you don't want people to get confused over yours and somenoe elses work. Heck - THEY might get credit for what YOU did! Shocking!

Also - it would require work. Mods get announced with a name, and 95% never get past the ideas stage. If they kept on posting though, it could tie up a damned good name for nearly ever! That would be a pain in the arse.

Simply put, i think y'll find its easier to leave people to their own devices, and hope sense prevails. If they make one which is too close to comfort, i am sure it will raise speculation in their comments section - and they may change it afterwards instead.

After checking it out, i think it would be tough to get confused. One is an internet exploring tool, the other is a system building tool. They shouldn't get confused over something that different
