Okay, probably my last question.......

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Okay, probably my last question.......

......for now.

GREETINGS!

As time winds down and the end of my excruciating mental anguish nears, I must prepare for the day of happiness.

Translation:
Upgrade Time

I have....
Video card: GeForce4 MX420
Memory: 256

I Can Get:
GeForce 4 Ti4200
or...
512

Question:
Which should I get right now? (as I am of a mere 15 years, I have VERY limited funds. My parents will only get me one of 'em.....and I've still gotta get the extra for the actual game from them, too)

Thanks In Advance

What kind of processor do you have?

Post Sun Feb 16, 2003 6:04 am

You mean 512 megs of RAM? If so I go for it.

I can definatly tell you by experience the amount of memory makes a big difference in performence...if I told you my outdated CPU and the advanced games I played because of my 640 megs of RAM, you'd think I'd have a magical computer. I also really don't see much to warrent getting another GeForce 4 (although the Ti is better than the MX).

It is an Athlon (no, I'm not changing this for a while)
Anyway, it's 1.3 gigs.

what resolution do you think you'll be playing at?

Post Sun Feb 16, 2003 7:40 am

1280x1024

Anyway, I think I'd be better off with the memory.

Hmm, big price difference there.

GeForceTi 4200 is > $120
512MB SDRAM < $50

They are not really in the same category. I say get 256MB more RAM for $20-$30, and then go on pricewatch or newegg and get the Ti for cheap. Of course, I would recommend a Radeon 9500 over a GeForce4 Ti 4200 anyday, but you did not ask my opinion

One more thing, you dont really need to upgrade. Your computer will run Freelancer just fine. I say, if Freelancer is the only reason you are thinking of upgrading, dont bother. Maybe pick up another 256MB of RAM because 256 is pretty low, but dont buy a new graphics card. Prices are always coming down, so only upgrade when necessary.

Depends where the money is from.

Definitely go for the RAM first. That will help you out a lot more overall.

However. if you are going to get the graphics card OR the RAM, and someone is buying it for you (i.e. not your money), be a little selfish and get the graphics card. They'll spend more money but you can probably work up enough money to get the RAM yourself and thus you get both. (Can anyone tell I was a manipulative teenager?)

IF you go for the graphics card, check out some reviews first. If you're going for the ATI Radeon 9500, make sure its the 9500 PRO. Otherwise stick to the GeForce. If you hold on a bit the GeForce's are going to drop a lot when the new one comes out in a few months

Check out this on the 9500 PRO. I personally like Tom's Hardware for all sorts of reviews and analysis.

Thanks you incredibly helpful people (Read: NOT sarcastic)!

Alright, now I know to take the memory.

I thought of the manipulation, but I need the remainder of my money to get Freelancer (memory ain't gonna do jack without the game).

This is the best community I've seen so far.

In a review in the Game magazine PC Gameplay (great mag if you can read dutch you have to read it it's great) they said the recommended specs were

A P-IV 1.7 GHz with 256 MB's of RAM and a 64 MB videocard (P-IV can also be replaced with Athlon equivelant)
