This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

optical mouse

I am eagerly awaiting Freelancer. It looks and sounds like it will be a great game. I have not really been consumed by a space sim/game since the original Privateer and an oldie called Starflight..

Anyway, per my subject, not really a Freelancer Q, but does any one use a cordless or regular optical mouse? If so, Is the tracking better than a regular ball mouse? I am just curious, because I am sick of cleaning my regular mouse... and it gets stuck a lot in games.

Moved to OT.

Yah, optical mice are much more precise than ball mice. But the biggest benefit from using an optical mouse is the fact taht you dont have to clean it everyday! Optical mice are a lot more precise which is why you see ppl use them in FPS games. The accuracy and smoothness you gain is very noticible.

Right now, i use the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer version 1. The first optical mouse which made it on the market, AFAIK. And its been working great for me. I've checked out the newer Explorers (I believe they are up to version 3 now) and they look good. But based on what ive seen now, Logitech makes the best mice -- the MX500/700. The MX500 is just the corded version of the MX700. In this case with the MX700, all reviews have given it praise. The issues experienced with older uncorded mice is nonexistent here.

BTW, welcome to the site!

A week ago I actualy got myself a new mouse. Based on the advice of the forum members here I got the Mx500 from Logitech. And I must say it is MUCH smoother than my previous Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer. When I run any FPS game now it almost looks like I have got myself a new graphics card. It is so smooth.
It is a bit narrower than my previous mouse so for quick and instinctive game playing it isn't as natural to me but I'm getting used to it.

LOL Mad Dog that is hilarious!!

Thank you all for your input. I have narrowed my choices down to 2.. Logitech's mx500 and the corded Microsoft Intellemouse exp. 3.0

According to Microsoft, the new sensor in the intellamouse explorer can read up to 6000 captures-per-second. I am not sure exaclty what this means but they say that it is better than the capture speed of the logitechs.

Since they are in and around the same price, wouldn't the explorer be a better purchase?

first of all i would like to say that optical mice are about 1000 times better than their tracking ball partners and eveyone should get one, second Mad Dog that is wicked funny, why did you buy so many mice if they didn't work?

I rule the world incognito!

Ohh they worked.... for a while, i somehow use them all up, then i have a retarded sister who doesnt know what to do with a mouse so she occaisionally throws it around the room, they where all brave mice.. but they died

No doubt... optical is the way to go. I recommend corded... I hear SOME wireless don't work so hot in games. That aside, w/ wireless you got battery issues... why trade one problem for another? It KILLED me to give up my Razer Boomslang, but it had to be done... optical is a huge difference. Personally, I have issues w/ most mouse wheels, but the intellimouse Optical (the one I have anyway) has deep ridges that catch your finger real well. I know most people don't have issues w/ the simple textured wheels, but if you're like me that kind of thing is important... might be something to consider.

Logitech's specs for it's MX line are as follows:

Image Processing: 4.7 megapixels/sec
Resolution: 800 dpi
Acceleration: 10g
Speed: 40 inches/sec

I really don't know how it compares to the Explorer's 6000/sec scan rate, or whatever. All I know is that the MX500 works flawlessly. I've moved it around as fast as humanly possible, and it never screws up, and maintains complete accuracy. This is probably the case for the Explorer as well, as optical mouse technology has just gotten good enough that there aren't any problems (you still have to buy the GOOD optical mice, though!).

I say, go with the one you think looks/feels better.

One of those dead mousey's looks like it's for a lefty. Upper left. IMHO, opticals are the way to go. Wireless is a nice novelty, but unless you regularly walk around with a knife or scissors (I can still hear my mom saying stop that you're going to poke someone's eye out wit that thing) and accidently cut the cords of a connected optical, you are taking a bigger chance with a wireless optical peripheral losing the signal due to low batterys (no one has come up with the invention of a low battery indicator on a wireless mouse yet?!?) or interference.

And so it goes....

@ sting, the mouse is not for a lefty
and you should get the rights on that idea! and sell it,, you'll be rich!

Stinger and others are right. Get an optical, but corded. I have optical wireless, and I regret buying it. Btw, my mouse does flash red when it's low-battery, and a friend of mine has wireless Intellimouse that sends warning to his desktop when it's underpowered.

I have the first Logitech Optical Mouse (the gray one). It's a great rodent, more precise than those regular mices with big balls... Useful in games, althoug my not-so close friend complains that the smoke grenada in CS makes his mouse stop responding but I think he's just a ****. Get a wired one, there's a smaller chance that you:
a) Drop the mice
b) Lose it somewhere
c) Will have the battery leak (I know it's rare but still...)

And lastly: I would take Logitech. I never trusted Microsoft periferials: they're all so... light.
