I really do miss the 19th century...

Don't tell me you're afraid of ghosts, dearie.
Had I chosen the one other course available to me, then there'd be some one else here who'd tell me not to duplicate a thread, as there was one on this subject already existent. Not quite a win-win, it seems.

1) Icons are ugly and their divergent natures detract from the synergy of a theme.
2) The little Shortcut arrow thingys are twice as worse
3) Taskbars have an auto-hide feature. Fiddle with it, lads.
In the past, I have gone so far as to create a desktop with zero icons: nothing but the background image on the screen. It's a small matter of an auto-hidden taskbar, transparent icons, removing all possible shortcuts on the desktop, and re-naming the My Computer and Recycle Bins with force hard spaces (Alt+160) with a desktop background that matches the background of the wallpaper.
For this particular desktop, I modified two things in my registry: one that eliminated the Shortcut arrows on the corner of the icons (most of those folders onscreen are shortcuts) and another alteration that allows me to re-name my Recycle Bin. All folders/icons on the desktop have been re-named with poetic yet pertinent titles: the Clockworks is the My Computer, the Minstrels is my MP3 ripper, the Scrying Glass is my DVD viewer, etc. Starcraft, Diablo, FPS's and two or three flightsims are included there as well. The Recycle Bin is now the Cask.
That, and the wallpaper image itself is a Photoshopped alteration from the original picture. If you seen the orginal (Vanity Fair mag, July 1999) you'd know what i changed.

And you expected me to see that how? Pale blue is impossible to see right next to white text. Try "Here's my desktop" or something.
