You may not know me but...

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

You may not know me but...

You might want to give this a try:

I am one of those "guys from the other forum". I respect your community and your game, and therefore will not be making any advertisements or plugs at all. I will, however, voice my opinion on the recent happenings here, and how they could be avoided.

I am a website owner/admin, and therefore understand the responsibility that comes with operating a website and moderating a discussion forum. Fortunately, I live in a country where free speech is paramount, and therefore I have the ability to provide a service for those people who have opinions that do not belong on a game website's forum. I have set up a fansite that is UN-MODERATED for people to use for flamewars, or anything else that doesn't fit within the scope of a normal game forum.

Is there no-one here that has webspace they would be willing to donate for such a purpose? It might not be perfect, but it is - for all intents and purposes - constructive.

I don't mean to suggest that someone try to take away users from this forum by creating a "mirrored" version of this one, rather, I think this forum could benefit from an "un- moderated" space for it's patrons to use. Blowing off steam is human nature, and locking threads only serves to alienate people who could otherwise provide useful insight to game issues.

Just my 2 cents.

Suggestion noted. And it will be discussed with the webmaster, Bargib, which just so happens to be away on a holiday these next few days.

I have known Bargib for a while now and i think he simply wants TLR to be more of a family oriented website/forum. Thus, no flame war forum. He wants this place to stay nice and thats what we, the mods, have been trying to do.

Closing of many of the threads are just because of their redundancy. Im not going to repeat this again. Ive already explained the locking reasons many times in those other threads but we do just want to keep this place nice and cool.

We'll take your suggestion into consideration and possibly change our style just a tad if necessary.

A flame War forum set up here? I don't really think this fits here, we try to keep things civilized here as much as possible, and i think this is a good way. There really haven't been much problems here and I haven't heard anybody complain about the moderating. People from the X2 Forum seem to be more used to their freedom of saying whatever they want whenever they want. I've got no problem with that as long as you follow the rules of this forum. Our house, our rulez.
I really don't see why there is a growing tension between trl and x2. Some dirty apples just try to spoil stuff for the rest of us (btw i read a post on the x2 forum about finally being able to discuss joystick here, and i have to admit some of the replies i read about the mods and the community here pissed me of)

Those same posts angered me as well, and that's why I decided to say something about it. I do not condone what my fellow forum users have done here - rather, I think it abhorrent. I do believe, however, that any community needs a place to vent where they can give their opinion without fear of being muzzled for any reason.

I DO NOT believe that off topic posts belong anywhere but an off-topic board.

Conversely, I believe that anything posted in an off topic board should not be deleted or locked unless it is hurtful to a person or persons, or vulgar in any way.

That's why we have an off topic board
anyway, you seem like an ok guy
Welcome to the forum

Thanks for the welcome

As for the off topic forum, why would this thread get locked?

Seems to me that it would have just gone off the page on it's own - no need to prevent others from replying if they wanted to...

Hey welcome Grimm, I hope you enjoy your stay here and it sure is nice to see a civil post.

A moderator probably closed it off as it was completely devoid of a point and un-conducive to discussion. Usually that sort of stuff is construed by mods to be nothing more than a big can of spam and if that was thier reason, i'd be inclined to agree. No offence to Godlike Entity though, we've all created a spam post at some stage. I know ive created a few myself.

Sometimes you need to prevent others from replying. Creating and answering threads is how you advance in rank in this forum, and some people take it too seriously. As you can see, the thread had very few "meaningful" replies, and it was very predictable that any further posts would consist only of one-liners, like "cool" "good luck playing the game" etc. While sounding casual, this is a subtle form of spamming your way up the chain of command.

Post Wed Jan 29, 2003 11:40 am

Fair enough - but have you considered other options as well?

One of the mods at "the other site" has come up with a ranking system based on how others rate your posts - therefore you can spam all you want and it won't make a lick of difference to your rank. Only posts you have made that other forum users think are useful or deserve praise will count towards your rank.

I like The Forum just the way it is, and i think this goes for most people here. We have a clean and tidy ship here, and i don't think we should change that.

Ok... just on the closing topic issue... may I suggest this as an analogy to explain the mods purpose behind closing some threads...

1) Topics which have been discussed so often, it feels like the horse has been flogged several lifetimes over...

PERSON A - Why can't I have button T as forward!?...

PERSON B - You can!?

PERSON A - But I need it for the Target command!!

PERSON B - If you really want T as forward, then change the Target command to something else...

PERSON A - But I can't!!!!

PERSON B - Uhh... why?

PERSON A - Because T stands for Target... not Forward!!

PERSON B - Ooookk... how about A then?

PERSON A - NO... I want to use T!!!!

MODERATOR - Click...

Moral of the story... the horse is preverbial glue...

2) Topic which has less substance than a fancy meal consisting of one pea that cost $100 at a "fine" restaurant...

PERSON A - Hey this should be fun!...

PERSON B - What should be?

PERSON A - The game...

PERSON B - Hell yeah it will be so cool...

PERSON A - Yeah... I can't wait!!

PERSON B - I know what ya mean...

PERSON A - I reckon...

PERSON B - Yeah!...

MODERATOR - Click

Moral of the story - It's glue, it ain't goin nowhere!

The moderation is done the way it is to reduce unnecessary bad language, insults, spamming, and associated content. It's also done to keep discussions fresh... by closing one topic on Joysticks, nothing says you can't start another one, as has been done.

At the end of the day... and in this case, the working day... I'd say we all like to come here and read up and reply to fresh news, fresh content, fresh discussion... not something we've been replying to for the last 3 weeks, where we've had to repeat something on the 7th page that we said on the 2nd page.

It's all about freshness... liveliness... progression... interest... glues boring sometimes (most of the time )... plain and simple.

DISCLAIMER: The previous opinion is that of the author, and may or may not be the opinion of this board, it's owner, it's moderator, or any of it's members, however... I hope it's reasonably accurate and will be backed up by fellow members .

Sounds like a valid idea Grimm, but it's probably a bit late in the piece to implement those kind of changes to the ranking system. It's a bit to close to FL's release date. I would also imagine that would pretty well much mean we'd all have to all go back to 2nd liuetenants unless Gib wanted to spend weeks manualy resetting everyones rank under a new system. Which im pretty sure he wouldn't and I know I certainly wouldn't enjoy having to start from scratch again. It's taken me nearly 2 years to get to my current rank.

Still it's not really my place to say. You can always email Gib personally and see what he thinks.

since I am quite new and have no mod-experience, here another perspective.

I have to say that I decided to join these forums precisely because that are kept reasonably full of content. I find it a waste of time to have to read other people's flame wars just to be able to follow threads I like, and I believe the forums are the wrong place for letting off heat. Those people should go out clubbing or to the gym, and not take things so personally.

I like the idea of peer-ranking, but it does seem a bit late to introce it, and I'm not sure how much it would help. Personally I never look at the ranks - I just don't know who is higher or lower, but I know the names of the posters and what type and quality of contributions to expect from most. That's after following this site for only about a week or two.

Grimm, about roughly a year ago we revamped our post ranking system. The ranking system that you suggested (the one about be influenced by how others rate our posts) was submitted. However, it was ultimately declined because we were afraid that if one person had a disagreement on a certain issue that people would take sides and vote accordingly. In the end we merely changed the number of ranks and the number of posts required to achieve those ranks. A good suggestion, Grimm, but we decided to keep things the way they are. By the by, a good post, shows some thoughtfulness on your part. Glad you're here, stick around a while.

Hi, I'm another alien from another forum (X2). I've been following things from the other side and thought I'd point out that we have our idiots, just as I'm sure you do. Having read what Grimm's written, I'd back him up and say that Cartel Forums (along with several other fan forums) have really helped our community, not just in cementing friendships and alliences but in alowing spleen venting to go on at an appropriate place and time. If I could rate your post Grimm, I would.

Like someone in another post, I'm sure FreeLancer will be added to my collection as well as X2. Keep up the pressure on your deveoloperes, we'll keep the pressure on ours and then we can all have maximum fun.
