hehe, namesake only. Afaik it's just a communications network, whereas in Terminator it's a defence network controlled by computer AI to make autonomous decisions about defence is it not?

I strongly suggest that you check out CV's "Tek Wars" thread, which personally i think should be renamed "Rise Of The Machines" and stickied - at least until the black helicopters come circling, in which case it will be too late for us.

it's all real, you know; Skynet, H-Ks, cyborgs, mimetic polyalloys, invisible frogs, pulse lasers, exploding toilets, cars that kidnap their owners. Only in the last couple of weeks, a robotic artillery piece went insane and murdered it's fleshie human operators and bystanders. Already, US Cyber Command or whatever it's called is taking mere humans out of the decision making process. Your retinas, fingerprints and dna aren't being scanned and recorded to prevent "terrorism" but to prepare you for robotic machine rule! before the Earth is reduced to a hydrocarbon smog fit only for occupation by lizard men!

We're just too backward in the idea of technology and fighting.... we still drive around in soft top landrovers in a war zone ffs with weaponry that doesn't work in desert conditions (in a desert warzone) and without proper footwear!!

Navy exercises involved shouting "bang" instead of firing rounds as well... high tech simulations eh

ah Chips, that's gone on for many years. Back in the early 80s, Royal ordnance couldn't reach the quality standards for certain calibres of ammunition, amongst them being 37mm rounds for naval anti-aircraft guns (Oerlikons) As this resulted in several rather spectacular barrel explosions, one of which I witnessed, 37mm rounds were withdrawn and for the best part of a year, we had to pretend to shoot, because we had to keep what good stocks we had in reserve in case we had to do some real shooting.

then of course there was the black comedy of the SA-80, the overpriced and over engineered gun that fell apart when used. In the first Gulf War, British soldiers were *accidentally* losing them and coming back with M-16s and AK-47s, because they worked and the SA-80 didn't. A chap I worked with for many eyars who was out there in the infantry said half his section managed to get rid of theirs, because if they shot the damn thing it jammed, broke, or even blew up.

They still jammed this time around from what I understood, unless the media is suffering from a 10 yr lag - and the bangs were due to shortfalls in the finances that meant on armed manouvres they had to shout instead of fire live rounds - which was only 3 or 4 years ago

Of course, "intelligent skin" for tanks and whatnot has been reported, but in true discovery style - not heard a bean since, so probably works. Whether it's ever implemented due to cost issues I dunno.

If the military didn't have such tight finances then i am sure we'd have some awesome (we wouldn't hear about it) technology going - scientists exist, and i think that often the research does too... but without money, it's all irrelevant.
