Heroes

I'm just wondering, does (did, season 1 just ended) anyone watch this show? If you haven't, you don't know what you've been missing. (You can still catch up, you can watch the ENTIRE first season on nbc.com/heroes, with only about fifteen seconds of commercials every six to seven minutes.)

Heroes is a show about people all across the world who discover that they have extroidinary abilities. From Issac Mendez, an artist who can paint the future; to Hiro Nakamura, a Japanese desk jockie who discoveres the ability to bend space and time; Claire Bennet, the indestructible cheerleader; and Sylar, a serial killer who targets other people with special abilities. They all come together, they must learn to use their abilities, and eventually, save the world.

Yes, I know it probably seems like I'm talking about X-Men, but trust me, this is no X-Men rip-off.

If you choose to pass on this, then you're missing out on what very well may be the best show on TV. There's plenty of special effects, and most are movie quality. The first several episodes are pretty graphic, such as the cheerleader waking up during her own autopsy, or someone's head being telekenitically sliced open so that Sylar can steal the brain (no I'm not kidding), altough the later episodes aren't as graphic because NBC caught a lot of flack for putting graphic violence on primetime TV.

Along with each episode that was shown, was a four to five page graphic novel (comic book basically), that usually fills in the gaps in the story between episodes. They also have on their site interviews with the cast and crew, full episodes with cast and crew commentary, among other intresting things.

If you watched it, let me know what you thought of it. If you didn't, you really missed out but can still watch the whole series (well, the first season) on the website, and you'll be glad you did.

Just saw episode 15(?) last night. Love it! Just about far enough from reality for me to watch. I like to escape reality in my entertainment and this does it without being excessively plastic and poorly made.

Honestly, I caught a few episodes of this show, and I'm not impressed. A guy that can control time? Weak. A cop who can read people's minds? Seen it before. Someone who can walk through walls? Been there, done that. Where have I seen all this before? Oh, yeah. X-MEN. I have yet to be convinced that this is anything BUT an X-men ripoff. The concept is identical, there's nothing original here. And quite frankly, it's less interesting than X-men.

If you disect any story down to it's lowest common denominator they all end up throw away in the fashion which you just displayed. Games are vulnerable to the same thing. The old idea that there are no new ideas just new ways of looking at the old ones is true here. X-Men I would find very kiddy-corner typical Super Hero run of the mill but Heros has a few more levels, a lot darker morality, a bit more growed up in it's presentation.

Tell me what film, game or story is "original" and I will give you ten examples of where it was done in some way, some where before.

That is true, Dru. There's definitely an audience for a show like this, but I'm not a part of it. I'll stick with X-men. Some of the stories you seen in some X-men comics are a hell of a lot darker than what you will ever see in Heroes. But X-men, like Heroes, isn't for everyone. Maybe I should have used a different word than ripoff. But X-men has an obvious influence on Heroes. Maybe if I had kept up with the season and watched every episode, I may have come to a different conclusion, but I lost interest the moment I saw the episodes I mentioned. I'm not going to tell people not to watch the show, far from it. If you like it, great. I just didn't see anything I really cared for. Oh, well. There are other shows on TV for me to watch.

Well I agree there. I actually like X-Men but for different reasons. Any story can be placed in a genre and withing each genre stories will have similarities, that is perhaps a truism as the very reason they are placed in the same genre is because of the similarities.

X-Men is a rip off of any other super hero tale about mutations. SpiderMan mutates from a spider, SuperMan mutates in a sense by being out of his natural environment. The moral dilema of how you use your power, micro and macro wars of good and evil, the struggle to find your place, these are all common to all tales landing within this genre.

Also, I accept that sometimes a film, T.V. show or other just does not catch you in the right mood. The first time I sat to watch The Sopranos I was tired and not really in the right frame for it and so turned it off. Nine (?ish) series later I never got back into it but I am told that it is some of the best telly in the last decade.

One thing I do not abide, and meezo this is not aimed at you, is pople who "pooh pooh" sci-fi because it is silly or staid or "rip off" in the same way that "pop" music is given the big dismissive wave and all I should do is listen to Mozart. There is a place for escapisim and silliness and there is always just pure entertainment as a motive not just intelectual enhancement to turn on a show after a hard day's work.

Druid: Even if that was aimed at me, I don't take umbrage at it. In fact, I agree with you for the most part. I honestly have no problems with "silly" sci-fi, as long as it's a well done kind of silly. Even if it isn't particularly well done, as long as it shows SOME effort, I'll probably be hesitant to say it's crappy. Mutant-X on the other hand, was garbage. THAT one was a blatant X-Men ripoff. I may give Heroes another chance when it comes on DVD.

*I* really enjoyed Heroes despite a weak start, it really improved and I warmed up to most of the characters, and how they are all connected in various ways (although the frequent revelations of new secrets can get rather confusing) Mind you I'd warmed to Hiro's character from the start and I still find his stories the most compelling.

I've also been watching Jericho and I really hope it gets picked up for second season.

*sniff!* with no BSG for another year, and Heroes and Jericho seasons over, I'm stuck for something new to watch. Can't get into House or Grey's Anatmy, stopped watching 24 ages ago, won't watch Nip-Tuck. Any suggestions?

Yeah, Jericho was alright, but IMO Heroes was much, much better. Unlike Jericho, the finale for Heroes was actually good. That Jericho finale was one of the worst I've seen in a long time.

And I actually kind of like House. I like it because it's one of those shows where you can just watch one episode every once in a while and you won't be confuised as hell (unlike Jericho or Heroes which you kind of have to watch from the beginning, seeing as it's serialized.)

EDIT: Sort of embarassing actually, but I seem to have accidentally clicked the 'click here to be notified by email every time someone replies to this topic', and I've forgotten how to disable that.

@Taw: To start, "Hi mate".

Any suggestions?
Did you see The Lost Room? May be worth finding if not.

They just showed the first episode here in the Dutch Mountains.
I was anticipating this one, but naturally I missed it, forgot to set the DVD-rec...
*sigh*

I seem to be missing every first episode of every great show.
