My new computer!

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

My new computer!

After months of planning and indecision, my new laptop has finally arrived... and oh is it nice. The specs:

HP Laptop... 15.4" widescreen

Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2 ghz
2 GB DDR2 RAM
120 GB Hard-drive
256 mb GeForce Go 7400 video card

And of course, integrated wireless, bluetooth etc...

And Windoze XP Pro... none of this Vista garbage.

Its quite fascinating to watch how well the workload is divided up between the cores, and multitasking seems to have no limit as of yet, save for the perilously small battery life (2 hours with wireless on). Contrary to Taw's predictions, it runs BF 1942, and other games, even Darkstar One without any problems. Granted DSO can't be cranked up to full power... but even most desktops can't handle that just yet. Nice this is though, DSO appears to run on both cores simultaneously, though I'm not sure if this gives a huge performance boost or not. Off to save the universe again!

Very shiny, J Dawg. How much did that set you back then?

I think it's time I upgraded too. I'll spend a goodly extra amount to make it next-gen. I'm salvaging a few bits and pieces that I won't really need (and hence don't want to buy) from my current rig but new specs are as follows:

Windows Vista
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS
Gigabyte GA-965P-S3
2GB RAM
Prolite X486S Monitor

All that for the princely sum of £850

Anyone have any comments or suggestions for different hardware?

just goes to show how much laptops have improved i the last couple of years, now they can approach desktops in performance.

What, Havent you ever heard of 'Desktop replacement' laptops taw?

As for the specs, very impressive. It's good to hear that the dual-cores are better at multitasking and power increase than they say!

Quick question: Is the E6400 32 bit or 64 bit? I need to know which version of Vista to buy.

As for approaching desktops in performance, Taw, I must say that all those powerful components packed together into a small space makes me a little nervous. You'd need a seriously powerful fan system to keep it from melting.

oddly enough, I've not only heard of them, I support them too. I'm still not convinced that they really have been true 1 for 1 replacements, until fairly recently, and as gaming platforms, I've only seen realistic comparative performance in the last year. Besides, those desktop replacement laptops are actually quite large, some of the ones I've seen have been barely portable.

I wouldn't mind a nice Core 2 Duo or Turion 64 laptop though, anything's better than the p.o.s. laptop I've got I hate it.

A computer-related thread in the OT forum... I never thought I'd see the day. *Shakes head sadly, and shakes paw at Dawgy while simultaneously pointing in the direction of the "Hardware" forum with the other paw*

Post Sun Jan 21, 2007 3:03 pm

oh I'm fed up of telling people that, no-one ever pays any attention

Post Sun Jan 21, 2007 3:06 pm

Yeah, what are they odds of a thread about computers appearing in the Off Topic section in a forum dedicated to computer space sims?

I guess it's a catchment thing.

Taw - I know what you mean. Bloody kids!

The Hardware forum is kindof a vacant alley

Post Sun Jan 21, 2007 10:04 pm

You can't accuse me of having a topic in off topic that's not on topic.... it just doesn't work.

This rig set me back about $1700 US before taxes, so it actually wasn't too bad. This has several fans and only activates them as needed.

As far as ports go, it's quite nice. Nothing lost on the back, even.

Right side:

Power, 1 USB, CD/DVD+/- burner, Express Card

Left side:

S video, 2nd monitor out, Modem, ethernet, 2x USB, firewire, plus 4-in 1 memory card reader.

Front:

Microphone, 2x headphone, and infrared for remote control which I didn't get... Speakers aren't half bad either. Did I mention integrated webcam?

Post Mon Jan 22, 2007 3:11 pm

You are happy that you have an integrated webcam? Webcams! Unclean! Unclean! Damn things, always watching you... Anyway, what's next Dawg? "Myspace" and "blogging"? *Shudders, and hops off to wash paws in disinfectant*

Post Mon Jan 22, 2007 9:19 pm

No, no, I shan't be off on Tawspace.com or doing any bogging anytime soon. The webcam was included, but is actually quite useless except for taking grainy stills (same resolution as on your average cell phone)... naturally it only works with MSN messenger and not any of the others.
