I can only say that I use Keiro personal firewall (free) rather than Zone Alarms one, but it was purely to do with changing permissions on exe files not actually registering, and trying to then connect to the global server for FL would freeze me comp up because it was waiting for me to click on an invisible (FL was still on top) box that says "allow access"
Avast was pretty good, apart from the verbose part of it that tells me in an American drawl that "The virus database has been updated". It also slows the system up a lot more than AVG on startup, but it does have a load of memory scanning going on as well as other stuff (don't think AVG monitors the memory does it?). It udpated every two days or so.
Taw - you tried IE 7 yet? Tried it at work, not sure about it's security as i only know what I read about it - and i haven't read much - but at least it's a tad bit more compliant these days (they still have more work to do though). It's a hell of a lot better than old IE 6 though, appears its got some netscape-esque features such as antifishing protection etc. I do like my opera, but somehow I am using firefox the most these days...
