Maths question

Ok, I've been trying to figure out how to prove that 26 is the only number between a square and a cube such that:

x^2+2=y^3.

And thus prove no other values exist for x and y except 5 and 3 respectively and so x^2+1 can only be 26.

I few months ago I would have been able to help you, but I foolishly took a quarter break away from calculus. I'd start by plotting that equation, though you may need some computer aids (and maybe convert to a set of parametric equations?).

What does 26 have to do with square and a cube? and who are X and Y? And what are they trying to prove? dont they understand they dont need to prove things to other people and that they can just be themselves? Wait, sorry, ive been watcing to much days of our lives latley. As for the actual problem, I have no clue. Sorry.

Zeta, 26 is the only integer that exists between a square (25) and a cube (27).

If we make a general case (I am going to switch x and y round because I have it on good authority that the answer involves elliptic curves) then y^2+2=x^3. If we substitute in the supplied values (y=5 and x=3) then we get 25+2=27, which is obviously correct. I want to prove that 5 and 3 are the only possible values of y and x (respectively) where the general case is mathematically possible.
