The Movie was so good, I forgot the popcorn.

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

the abyss

Great flick - it was a book by one of my favorite authors, Orson Scott Card.

Very touching movie, great message and story!

topher, in terms of Linsy's(sp) sacrifice for Bud, Extremly good.

even despite Mary Elizabeth M's hammy overacting? sorry but at that point I was hiding my face in embarassment, no wonder it bombed at the pictures. Who couldn't predict that not only was she going to die but she was going to come back to life, although my money was on the aliens doing it. You knew she was going to be ok when Ed Harris started screaming *you never gave up on anything in your life blah blah blah* even if you hadn't figured it out earlier.

and to top it all they were simpering jellyfish aliens out of Encounter at Farpoint *oo peace and love, peace and love* Best thing about the Abyss? Michael Biehn's mad Marine. Please note the use of a Titanic like image as his submersible pod sank into the deep. Not the most original director, Cameron, is he?

it's not a bad way to spend an afternoon but I'd love to know how you can consider this such a compelling drama. The last film that had me glued to my seat in complete suspension of disbelief was *Downfall* and before that *Magnolia* but The Abyss? it's not like it's even well-cast, MEM is terrible in it. Ed's workaday at best in this, all the others apart from Biehn are instantly forgettable.

All in all, I though Liza did really good. The Char in the beginning, I hated, the aditude projected bi the name, Queen B..... of the universe. But she won me over with teh under water scene. Taw, what did you think of Forrester, or have yyou seen it yet?

Post Tue Apr 11, 2006 2:15 pm

Finding Forrester? No I haven't seen it, well not apart from the last few minutes. Funny sort of Bond film really.

in defence of the movie -

it touches me, firstly because I wanted some one to care for me in the way Bud and Linds cared for one another in the last half or the movie; secondly it is a great book and I liked seeing it put to movie (even with the changes); thirdly I really like Michael Beihn, he's cool.

But, probably the life changing type of movie for me would be - Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I have never eaten mashed potatoes with out making Devils Tower since.

You're the Man Now, Taw-g! bawhahahahahaha - i crack me up

re:the abyss(mal) probably the coolest underwater movie anyone's made, but yeah it's nothing to rave about
re:close encounters of the lame kind - kids stuff. fire in the sky , although a bad movie was infinitely cooler because it was really disturbing, like aliens should be
re:contact - riveting up until she met the 'alien'
re:apocalypse now - not one of either brando or martin sheen's good movies imo, platoon w/ charlie, dafoe, and berenger was a powerhouse of great acting
re:hellraiser - gross dude! just gross
re:2001 - awesome, as was 2010(or whichever it was) - i would really like to see a 2061 since it is by far the best part!
re:titanic - a shamefully bad movie, worse still because it is the #1 box office seller in history - i just hope every guy that had to sit through it got some nookie

C_V: it's been a long standing TLR:OT habit to refer to any film with Sean Connery is a Bond film. It all started when my son was watching Hunt for Red October and asked what Bond was doing on a Russian submarine. And i thought Fire in the Sky was a 70s made for TV film about a comet that was heading for Phoenix, Arizona?

topher: I didn't even know it was a book! I've never read anything by Orson Scott Welles or whatever his name is.

Post Wed Apr 12, 2006 12:58 pm

behold! the wonderous internet! maybe your caveman browser doesn't have IMDB in the search bar

to me, roger moore is the better Bond; for one thing he's actually english and he's got class, whereas sean connery looks like cross between a used car salesman and a pricey pimp

p.s. the sheer number of movies with recycled titles that aren't remakes causes me to ponder Revelations, and why it's not listed as a Sign of the end times (oh yeah, its a two thousand year old book written by space aliens for all we know) ^__^

Let's face it Pete. Some of us are *ahem* older than the others.

Sean Connery is and was the ONLY Bond. HE is the man who made the model for all Bonds that followed and the rest really pale in comparison to him.

it was called *A Fire in the Sky* so I was right ner ner ner I can't help it if Hollywood can't come up with original titles or plots! I rather enjoyed it at the time, lame and cheap as it was even by the lacklustre standards of the era. It clashed with some drivel my mum and dad wanted to watch so I had to watch it on a flickery b/w portable in my bedrooom which was freezing cos we didnt have central heating or double glazing

getting back on topic, it's a bit restricting limiting the choice of film to one only, as different films impact on you in different ways. I tried to sneak a few others in but didn't wax lyrical about them. I'm a sucker for upbeat emotional endings tinged with a hint of tragedy myself, or is that tragedy with a bit of emotional uplift? I'm never quite sure.. I had in mind the final scene of Cinema Paradiso, well the last 30 minutes really of the director's cut, which completes the story and gives the final moments a great deal more poignancy and meaning. Think i might go and watch it again..

Yeah.. I'm with you Taw on the inability to list more than one..

being a Kubrik fan.. a couple of his are unique:

Full Metal Jacket.. and Clockwork Orange.. for different yet similar reasons.. lol.. (Sorry Final.. got ;em in anyhow..) lol

Harrier

Well then Taw what was your thoughts on "What Dreams May Come" ?

I loved it but I really cant watch it beacuse I lost my own mother in a car accident. So this one kind of hits a little too close to home for me.

Blessed Be to all those that still dream of the flight to the stars.

The reason I wanted to limit to one, is that one special movie/story that made/makes a differnce with you. Yes several are good, but to have one, means you have to think about it, and decide the BEST one and its meaning. Harder to do, with just one limitation. I've seen several movies that are redeaming, but are not the BEST one, like Spitfire Grill, The Robe, Walking Tall (Not the rock version). But Forrester is the one, that can STILL motivate me, when I can't seem to make myself sit down, and write.

The last film I saw changed my life, V for Vendetta! Hurrah for anarchy!..Er no..can anyone tell me who the nice man was who was handing out "A for Anarchy" leaflets after the film?

I don't really recall any movie that changed my life, stirred some emotion certainly, but..
maybe when I was a kid and more impressionable..hehe, I remember, a french tintin movie (as far as I know the only one with real actors ever made) called "the golden fleece" used to be my favourite for some reason, when I was very young. Anyone seen it?
Anyway back on topic, if I had to choose one film, possibly Das Boot directors cut (aka the really really long version ), best war film ever in my opinion, and it certainly had an effect on me.

Taw , have you ever seen the Apocalypse Now "Redux" version that pops up everywhere, you know the one that adds two meaningless sex scenes and ruins the most interesting charecter? Do you agree that it was terrible, or is that what you refer to when you talk about the film? I can't seem to find the original anywhere, not that i've looked much.
