Submitted for your consideration

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Apparently, there is an old space sim caled 'Allegiance' that the source codes have been released for- does anyone have any info regarding this game? I know nothing about it, but it sounds good..

website:http//research.microsoft.com/research.allegiance/

I encountered this in the latest edition of 'Computer Gaming World', in an issue tagged as the "101 freegames' issue".had what looked to be a couple of other interesting titles,'Space merchants: Conquerors' and a bit called 'Star Wraith 2' tagged as a 'Wing Commander rip-off'..

don't have a website listed for the former, but for the latter-http:darkbasic.thegamescreators.com/7m=showcase_view&i=64

Apparently, the genre isn't as inactive as we thought-maybe they DO read their mail!

Yes, I remember that game but I have not really been able to play it because my joystick is messed up and I'm too cheap to buy another one.

the impression i took away from reading about it is that its most definitely *team* oriented.i like that, however - if playing on a team is the only option...weell...i can take it or leave it.what i really did enjoy learning was that multiple players occupy the larger vehicles to man turrets, steer and drop bombs.another thing i felt ambivalent about was the conflict;your team needs to gather resources to destroy the other, ala starcraft or some other RTS.i like the idea of building bases but i hate the idea that once the *mission* is accomplished everything is reset & a new map is random generated.
basically, its just not my style - i like fighting as a team, but i also like to just do my own thing sometimes.

I used to play Allegiance quite a bit. It's a very fun game, it has, last time i played, a program for beginners, well established clans and friendly players. Some aspects of the game may not appeal to some people but it is nonethe less a very fun game. There are a few different aspects to the game. Resource gather: the commander can build miners and if playing certain factions mines on special asteroids to generate cash. Research is done to gain better weapons and ships. Players can be put into wings so that they are easier to command, there is also a quick voice chat menu, there are some positions that aren't in a wing such as treasurer which takes responsibility for some of the cash.

Game settings are very modifiable, do you want capships or not, how many teams, what starting cash, it's been awhile so i can't remember everything but this game is VERY good i recommend it to anybody with an interest in getting space sims. You don't have to be the big guy at the top you can just be a pilot who follows orders to get the satisfaction of destroying that enemy supremacy base. Not to advertise or anything but this game has a very addicting quality to me, but i have alot of other games to play, and right now i can't play any because my computer is getting reformatted because of viruses. I'm going to stop here before i keep rambling on. I highly advise you all to give the game a try even if you don't thikn you'll like it, the last time i palyed it the community was very helpful, like i said thers an online program for new players as well as some offline tutorials to get you started, it also has mouse flight. im going to leave it to you to find though!

First off, thanks to dragonborn for the more detailed info- and to Arania PFY for the inspiration..

Took a good hard look at the info presented on their website, and dug into their history a bit- If you ever thought that MS truly bailed on us here at FL, check out their story from way back when,'cause it's almost enough to make you get pi**ed off at what had been done. The whole thing is almost epic in proportion..

This heavily team oriented the game is somewhat the antithiesis to FL, in that individual actions ( except as they apply to a common goal) are not really encouraged. And, there really isnt a 'game' per se to explore. This seems to be a leftover from the massive multiplayer early years when things were very linear. The learning curve is, as they tell those willing to look, very steep- it's said to be similar to X3 in complexity, and you'll be a noob there for a bit by all indications- but the squad based tactics in addition to the need to keep an overall strategic view in mind would seem to be a fun payoff for anyone willing to put in the time. And the screenies look pretty cool, too...

The other thing that seems to be worthy of attention is the fact that the modding community is very active in their universe- almost as active as ours is, by all indications- and the key point here- they have access to their source code.
And that just cant be a bad thing, can it?

The big problem? In a word, players- people have become so disenchanted with the problems that they left to find greener pastures, everything from hackers to MS pulling completely out of supporting the game leaving the community to find their own way through the fog. They do, however, have a dedicated core group of players who have refused to let the game just die and who have decided to make a go of it themselves with a respectable measure of success. Sounds... familiar, doesn't it?

Well, we'll see- as I'm downloading the game at the moment, guess I'll just have to go and have a good look around at what they have to offer. Talk to you all in a week or so...
