Game making...

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Game making...

I am just wondering something, how does one go about making a game?

I mean not making the game its self, but releasing it to general public. I mean large corporations and companies have it easy, they have capital and reputation that backs them up, but anyone have an idea how would an average joe go about this business, or getting in touch with numerous game companies that would be willing to help out?

Me and my friends already got the basic ideas down...

Characters, settings, the storyline, programs to be used (all the other details), support from teacher and even a sponsor that is willing to back us up with any investments that we would require. The sponsor, as it appears, is willing to give us $5k for any other supplies, just so we could get started....

Anyone got any experience in this field and would be able to give out a few pointers?

well the sponsor might be able to help?

I am also trying to sell a game, all be it a boardgame. And in my personal experence your best bet would be to sell it to a established company. Of cource that is the easy way. If your like me thou you could set up a website to sell your game, maybe even get a domaine name if your looking into doing more then one game. Right now I have had my game under development for two years and I have hit a finatial wall that might take me another six months to overcome. Best of luck on your game. But know that releaseing your own game will bring on more then a few headachs. And never think that you have thought of every angle because more then likely you haven't, and don't get discuraged when sales dont meet up to your expectaions right away.

Blessed Be to all those that still dream of the flight to the stars.

Write up a small demo and send it to a publisher (or more than one and take the highest bid if you get any). See if they like what they see, and if they'll take you in as one of their developers. Check out Microsoft (of course MS goes first, this is TLR) and Vivendi first, then go to smaller publishers.

@ff
possible, my friend told me that the sponsor mentioned he might be able to help with marketing (if needed), so yea I guess he could know a bit..

@House
I think we will proly go with a publisher (once the project is acctualy done..we still need to start, because setting up a domain name, will cost even more.

@Steve
I think thats the best bet, the sponsor also wishes to see some kind of demo before getting involved 100%, therefore we will have sometihng to show to potential publishers as well. The biggest issue with contacting a large company is that they might like our idea, dismiss it but start working on something similar themself (could be a possibility, no?). Also, by the developer, I am hopping that you mean we make the game, but the large copmany publishes it? Truly, I dont wont them taking all the credit, I wont to see the name of me and my team on there too

gah, the biggest prob will be getting a liscence from Sony...in order to release it for console. I cant really see a fighting game released for PC, FPS and such yea..but a fighter..not

a fighting game for the PC...... look at the keyboard. each key could be coded for a different move. It would give the game a ton of replay value. Just a thought, take it or leave it as you wish. It's your game not mine

If you have good, solid ideas - then check out the websites of existing games companies. Nearly every single one I have visited have positions open.

Jobs such as level designer, storyline writers etc are always open (dependant upon art skill for some!) - storyline requires things such as a 4 level dialogue (as in 4 missions...), descriptors etc.

Sites checked such as:
Obsidian
Rare (makers of Goldeneye)
Bioware

It may be simpler to use your ideas to get you that job instead, and then work from the inside. If you do attempt to apply, don't forget it needs to be of the highest possible standard, interesting and attention grabbing. It would have to stand out from a plethora that I am sure they receive for each position.

@house
hmmm, that is true! I will consider that

@Chaps
A job at a company? well I wish, but I am HS Junior..they are proly looking for people fresh out of college, people that finnished the education for that kind of job. And than also..I am not adult yet (17 years old...)

I ***** about this a lot, but here goes again: There is no real way to get an indie game out and make money off it. The game distributors aren't interested in groundbreaking games, they're interested in the bottom line.

But yeah, give it a shot anyway, can't hurt.

Website. If you haven't got a website in todays society, you do not exist.

But I'm not gonna come along and talk about it if I can't offer something, that'd be rude, eh? I can make you guys a website. If you're interested, write up a website design document with what you want on the site and send it to the e-mail in my profile.

no worries about the site m8 (both my teacher and I have some experience), its just that there is no point to acctualy set one up since we dont even have any gameplay done. I mean a game site without any screens is useless

but thx for the offer bro, I will keep it in mind for future reference

Post Wed Dec 21, 2005 3:40 pm

Without any screens? You talk rubbish, my friend! Why, the Openlancer site will be ready in a matter of days, and we haven't even finished squabling over how to start the PREproduction!

Screens can include concept art blackhole

i shall start by sayng you get a load of guys with a lot of talent (there are plenty here)
a game engine is a shortcut
then do a bit of work (optional)
good sales agency with good ads (critical)
then sell it to a big software house [as long as its not a space sim no money in those things
