Jack Thompson, WTH?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Do parents actually take responsiblity for their own childrens upbringing at all anymore?

Apparently they have very little responsiblity as it currently stands... most basic values and morals should have been instilled by the parents before they get near school teachers (age 5).
Teachers help develop them further...

I agree with that Mike. My parents still make sure that its a family dinner even now, except when 1 person is missing, then its kind of a free for all.

Chips--one doesn't really have a fully developed cultural-mental frame until about eight to ten. As Eddie Izzard puts it, you're basically on drugs. Children lack the capacity to reason or think in any deep sense about their own personal moral values. One can teach the concepts to children, and they'll know it in theory, but in practice it doesn't hold up in any similar fashion. One has to look at any group of primary school children to prove this: they constantly resort to hitting out of rage and fury, even when they 'know better'.

A true mentor, on the other hand, can cultivate the faculties of reason and morality in children past puberty--at the point when we don't listen to our parents.

I'm not claiming that parents are useless. Just not as instrumental in building up a sense of right and wrong as myth would have it.

Stodgy, conservative and old Economist magazine covered this issue about two months ago. And guess what? Came out in favor of games makers.

Concluding analysis was that: Like rock and roll music, violence or salaciousness in movies or in tv programing, violence and sex in video games (and gangsta rap) today are the new frontier against which some among the older generation are attacking as a destruction or erosion of culture and social values. Eventually what happens is that the old fogies, literally, die and what was once outrageous becomes the norm as the gamers themselves become part of the older establishment.

Also, what Archie posted about Thompson's hate mail to NIMF is revealing in that, he says there what he never says in public: The issue is with children or underaged players of adult content rated games.

I may be mistaken but this is the first time that I have seen this guy admit that the games in question are adult rated games and that the problem is with children playing them.

So, he admits that the games makers actually have exercised enough responsibility to rate the games' contents. But he takes the leap from that to simply claiming detriment to society when children play adult rated games as being the games makers responsibility.

THAT surely is more of a parental concern than a games maker's concern. Much like the grandmother who bought her 11 year old (forgot the age?) grandson GTA (which is NOT rated for 11 year olds anyway) and then decided to sue when she learned that he had down loaded the Hot Coffee mod.

Seems to me that this is why NIMF decided it was time to distance themselves from Mr. "I've got a rhetorical shotgun and I'm going to use it no matter what" Thompson.

And all of it is true
This next mail elicited a second call, which we have detailed in the strip. Gabe's own voice rose triumphantly throughout this phase, I thought perhaps he was just getting into the rhetorical spirit of the thing, but the reality is that Jack screamed at him the entire time. The point he submitted went without answer: if a company made his reprehensible game, he would literally have to sue himself and talk about what a bastard he was on national television.

Too bad the phone conversation couldn't have been recorded. Gives JT a chance to deny it as there's no direct evidence of the conversation.

But it puts paid to NIMF's decision to distance themselves from the guy.

The Kapitalist Vampyre wants too much (sorry for the Pun there)

ofcourse NIMF distances themself from the guy, because the way he is carrying on, it can very easily bite him up his arse, and it will in the near future if he goes on like this.

If it does bite him, NIUMF will too suffer a big image blow, simple rules of nature, and the basic instinct of survival

www.sadlyno.com

I think they have some of his stuff in their files. AND others.

"And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

I have been following JT's escapades with amusement, and I can safely assert that he is not making any friends. It makes me wonder if he will be the internet's next "D*r*k Sm*rt"... In any case, I'm just glad that nobody knows who he is here in Aus. except for those who are "in the know" .

Well, he hass openend up a few doors for me o insult some incredibly stupid (adult, teachers, would you believe it) people at my school without them knowing what the hell i am talking about (calling them stupider than Jack thompson doesnt mean anything if they dont know who he is, as esq said).

Honsetly my opinion of this fruitcake is that he is not human, he is not even subhuman. he...is...an...idiot. And i quote from the Aranic book of pest removal:

Species: Idiot
Core Genus: Various
Identifying characteristics: Low I.Q., stupidiy, low common sense
Threat level: Minimal
Eradication Instructions:
Idiots are one of the lowest forms of life, sharing similar characteristics to script kiddies and 'wannabe' hackers, but having a significantly lower base threat level. They are resistant to insults, verbal abuse, and even a degree of physical abuse, and have amazing counter-attack strategies that can become dangerous in the slightly more financially endowned.
Nonlethal eradication is difficult, as it is near-impossible to 'persuade' the species to leave, and one must rely upon more, artistic, methods of removal in minor cases. In major cases, it is reccomended that professional idiotremovers be contacted, as a group of numberous idiots, or a single powerful idiot can pose a significant personal threat. It is reccomended that you attempt to paralyze them by inducing a 'dummy-mode' (see: Dummy mode, Attr: BOfH) mental buffer overload by bombarding them with technobabble, and sneaking away while they are sifting through (larger idiots are somewhat resilient to these attacks, and some have been oberved to be immune. in these situations, more drastic methods must be employed)
If nonlethal eradication is unnecessary, idiots are especially vulnerable to firearms of almost all types, and the slightly more intelligent can make good moving targets, but otherwise remain stationary while being fired at.

If we want rid of him, we can just hope that he has a heart attack, runs out of money, or gives up. either those of the population will just start to ignore him, which i think will most likely happen.
