Google Earth

Has anyone else tried this?

www.earth.google.com

Its a freeware extension of their existing satellite/ mapping system online now. It got great reviews in the newspaper so I checked it out. It allows you to view anywhere on earth in satellite photos of varying resoultions, then overlay streets, businesses, etc and search for driving directions. It pulls maps off the server as you navigate around the world so its a fairly conservative download. Its one of those things thats pointless, but incredibly cool. Sorry if this borders on advertising, I'd just like to know others opinions of this interesting, yet startlingly free venture on google's part. It mystefies me how then can release all these new services for free, and entertains me to watch MS play catch up at every corner...

the previous google maps was crap, you couldnt get beyond sattelite view of kent where i live, but you can get pretty close to area 51, and the area surrounding it used for underground nuke tests o_O

Anyone know how to find out when some of these photos were taken? I've been trying to gauge it based on local construction projects, and I'm guessing my house was viewed in 2000, but I'm not entirely sure. Are the dates listed somewhere?

Post Thu Jul 14, 2005 7:28 pm

Umm, It's near Roswell, New Mexico. I'm not sure after that.

go to sightseeing, click area 51, and it takes you to the desert in nevada, a ways south of which, you can find an area used in nuke tests till 1992. you can see the craters.

You wouldnt see anyhting enar area 51 . Military has a schedule of when satellites fly over at certain times during the day they move everyhting outside underground so it cant be seen in photographs. They used to do this back during cold war with nukes and bombers so I wouldnt be suprised if they still do it at the current military testing grounds.
