Jazz

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Jazz

Well I dunno how many of you incredibly intellectual people listen to jazz, but I do!

Now I've finished my exams I have more time on my hands and so I decided to compose a jazz quartet piece.

Its still a kinda work-in-progress so any comments and helpful criticism would be appreciated.

I know the quality is kinda rubbish, but thats just because its a computer-generated midi file. Also, this means that there are some rhythmic errors with it.

But anywho, please download, listen and comment. (If any of the excessively musical of you would like the score then I can send that to you as well)

You can find it here

Oh, btw, please don't just tell me its s*** because you dont like jazz.

i like ambient jazz, instrumental stuff that you can just put on and have in the background.

I am a great fan of real jazz (note, 'smooth' jazz is not actually music, just a bad attempt at it.) Anyway, great ideas so far, I can see this leading to something greater. Have you decided on instrumentation yet? Perhaps adding drums/piano to this might help as well. Good phrasing and interesting choice of chords in some locations, just remember the phrase doesn't always have to end on the root. Keep going with this, I'm interested to see where it ends up.

I have always thougth to myself that Jazz is for old people. Now Hard rock thats another story, I love rock

Jazz for old people? What the deuce are you smoking?

Quite a lot of jazz is very good, but for most of it one really has to be in the mood for it (or at least that's my experience of it.). Which is the same for death metal, so it all balances out.

Intrament type for me, other than jut a little bit of Dixeland Jazz.

Well I'm not entirely sure about instrumentation yet, although I was thinking of going for something slightly less orthodox (possibly a clarinet quartet, becasue of the range of sounds in one family). As for drums, I think I may add some in, although composing drum parts isnt really my forte (lol, what a pun!). Haven't really thought about a piano part yet...

I always get complained at for my obsession with the root. I think its just a habit, although I'll have a look and see if I can possibly come up with some more original phrase endings.

Actually, if possible, could you give me an example of where you would change it?

Well I've taken another listen and come up with some things. The phrase ending around 29 seconds would be a good place to change stuff up a bit. You seem to be aiming toward more of a funk style with this. Who are your main influences (groups/ jazz artists you listen to most)? With what you have, I think you might give a try to a SATB saxophone quartet, though I'll have to give this some more thought. If you've got an image of the score avalible, I'd love to take a look. Maybe then I can tell you more. I'm not a composition/theory student, just someone who plays a lot and listens even more. I'd like to see where you go with this.
