New world record at the Shell Eco-marathon: a car made 5385 km with only one liter of fuel/petrol/gasoline (whatever you calle in your country). The ETH-PAC Car II set this astonishing record during a competition in Ladoux/France. For explanation: ETH is german abbreviation of Swiss Institute of Technology Zurich, a "technical university".

The car uses a fuel cell to convert hydrogen into electricity to power its electronics motors. For the record (5385km/l) the amount of used hydrogen is changed into its equivalent of fuel. As a rough calculation this is 15'200 miles per gallon !! The head of this University project states that "our main mission is to contribute to saving fuel and reducing harmful pollutants of passenger cars."

Fuel cells are cool! Too bad it's going to be years until the gas station down the street sells hydrogen.

no wonder the car did so good. it is so light a good gust of wind would blow it off the road, or a semi going by would also do the trick. one accident in this would be death for anyone in it. show me a car that can do this good, that has some strength to it and some speed to it, and I would be more impressed.

If everyone had your attitude then research would never get anywhere. Sure, it may well be light as a feather but everyone has to start somewhere. At least they got the darn thing moving. They can always concentrate on silly little technicalities like practical application later.

Right now, lets be glad that we're somewhere.

Dont get me wrong I am all for alturnitive fuels but what I was geting at is the the vechicle in question was not that great. this technology has been around for at least ten years and from what I read of the stats on the car the event was all but rigged.I was more impressed with the hydrogen gas station in europe and the hydrogen prototype car that toyoda ( I think it was that one,it might have been another one of the japanese car makers) unvealed a few years ago. press events like this do not impress me.

Point taken. However, I think it was Honda that made the H-cell engines you're talking about, but don't quote me on that.
