Unable to delete .exe files

Recently was downloading the Firefox installer (through Firefox of course ) so I could send it to someone. However, I cancelled the download as he said he had just downloaded it. When I went to delete the file from the desktop it said it is in use. So I rebooted my computer, and I still cannot delete it. When I attempt to run the file it says it is not a valid Win32 application and when I check properties the size of the file is 0 bytes. I tried replacing it with another .exe but it didnt work, I also could not rename it. Any ideas?

it was halfway through downloading??
doesnt firefox utilise .part files until downloading is complete? if so, see if you can find the .part file to delete. other than that...i hate it when you get those files that cant be deleted. maybe command line deletion?

Arcon is right, I usually see two files - the file I want, and then another file which is the downloaded part. When it finishes downloading, it 'constructs' the other part. I guess that Firefox may have a kinda 'download manager' capability - meaning that it kinda 'holds on' to the files - meaning your unable to delete them.

Also try to see if firefox is running in the background (task manager) and stop it if it is

After that, I dunno - I am not much of a computer knowledge man - I just fiddle with things til they work or break

Dunno if this will work, but try booting your PC up in safe mode and then deleting the file. Also, try ending any unneccessary processes before you attmept deleting it. If Firefox is hanging on to the file somehow this may close the program that is accessing it.

Then of course you could uninstall Firefox and start using a decent browser ------->

Accushot is correct. Safe mode load very few programs and will alllow you do delete the rougefile/program, do it all the time.

yeah, you could install IE again, then have sex with children straight after. You know, while you're accepting good ideas.

All right I see that my knowlegde is needed
Now the other file is for if you PAUSE your download. That way it stores the info there so you can hit resume and start right back up again. Its a temp file taht gets deleted once the other file is fully installed. Second the reason you cant del the .exe file is because FF is running. Go to task manager and go to processes and make sure no firefox.exe is running if it is Kill it

@para: Learn to use your computer That was rather simple
