trouble with computer (what else?)

i think my computer got owned by a virus or something. windows was very messed up, so i re-installed it. now, anything that connects to the internet will "perform an illegal" operation and shut down.
what kind of thing could be causing this?

(and if you forgot, i have windows 98)
(it's also not a problem with the registry, i backed that up a long time ago when i knew it was good.)

Windows 98 your going to have to get someone with a much better memory then me to answer this question...
I have trouble remembering what happened an hour ago let alone 7 years...

format your computer. reinstall 98 or get xp.

try windows update/spyware/adaware/online virus checkers(up to date). then do a scandisk and defrag. basicly give your pc the once a year good inside clean. if you dont feel like formatting. it might fix it.

One up on Speed, get win 2000 Me isn't worth the time. First, after reformating, you need all drivers current. A good reason to always to download them, to a disk, then have for later. Drivers are the first I would check.

When all else fails - reformat, reinstall, reap the rewards of a lousy backup schedule, repent.

well i was kinda hoping of a solution that didn't involve reformatting and moving a good 40GB of material all at once. *sigh* i guess i better get my other hard drive out...

Does your Dad have win XP or 2000?
If he does, use it for the time being on your computer.

You could try putting a magnet near the comp and leaving it for a few hours. Wipes everything clean
