Linux - The other white meat

I'm thinking of installing Linux on my extra 65 gigs of Hard Drive space the windows partitioner decided not to pick up (don't tell me how to fix it, 137 gigs is all I need and I want to branch out) and I was wondering if any of you use linux. I have a copy of Debian "woody" and tried to install it, but it takes like 5 hours to install and the gui doesn't work right. Basically what I'm asking is what is a good distribution of Linux for someone who doesn't really want to do much at the command line, doesn't want to hassle to install and who wants a decent, easy to use interface.

Ahem.

Only install Linux if you are sure you are prepared for how much you'll need to adjust after using windows. For preference, don't install it on a hard drive that has any valued documents. I had a mate lose 2 months worth of coursework thanks to Linux.

I know I'll have to adjust, and I'm prepared to do what it takes. I just want to expand my horizons, live a little in both worlds.

And seeing as I just started clean and have all my files backed up, that isn't really a problem.

Well Linux is truly only good for servers. Its not very good for Personal uses like gaming and stuff

Why don't you start with a CD distro that can be installed on a hard drive as well? Those require no customization, they just work. I recommend Knoppix or even better for your purpose, Kanotix.

A web search on those should provide you with the URL where to pick them up. If you need help, let me know.

And you'd be surprised how good for "personal use" it indeed has become meanwhile.

Yeah, I put Knoppix on a CD, ready to run when I get the chance. I don't intend on using it for gaming, I have XP for that.

Well. I suggest you try Kanotix, it's based on Knoppix but is even easier to run than Knoppix. And if you like it, you can install it on your free partition and try playing around with it.
