there is an online manual found HERE that can answer most of your questions, otherwise, if that doesnt work, here is my jury-rigging WLAN internet setup wizard


so, if im understanding you correctly your net setup is like so:

MODEM>------<Wireless router>- - - - - - - -<Computer

now, im going to but these into 3 sets of tasks, those that need to be done on the modem, those on the router, and those on the PC.

modem tasks-
1- hook the computer up to the modem to verify you have internet, reconfigure and retest if not.
2- deactivate DHCP server on the modem, its usually under 'LAN settings' or 'DHCP'
3- assign static LAN IP '192.168.1.1' with subnet '255.255.255.0'

Router tasks
1- change router IP address to '192.168.1.2'
2- run the internet connection wizard (its in there)
3- set WEP encryption (i would advise 64-128 bit encryption with MAC restrictions)
4- activate router's DHCP mechanism

computer tasks-
1- set WLAN settings to aquire an automatic IP address, but tell it to use DNS server of '192.168.1.1' as primary.
2- connect to the WLAN network
3- test the internet, if it works, switch to Automatic DNS detection to see if it works (if it dosent, keep DNS manual), if internet does not work, see if the router is accessible, if you can see the router, its an Router-Modem problem, if not, its a computer-router problem.

Arania- Thanks for being willing to help, however, I am having some problems. I do have a working internet connection, but it only functions when connecting the modem directly to the computer using a USB cable. The step's you've outlined are clear, but I'm not sure how to go about doing them. How do I change the IP addresses for the modem and the router? When I open the 'Netgear wireless assistant" application, it indicates that it is connected to a network, but the lights on the router (for internet, and the wireless connection) only flash and are not steady. Do I need to have a physical ethernet connection to the router to change its IP? Thanks for all your help, if you could explain in a bit more detail it would be much appreciated.

ok, ill outline the steps for each task:

modem tasks-
2- deactivate DHCP server on the modem, its usually under 'LAN settings' or 'DHCP' - There should be a 'DHCP server option somewhere in the LAN options on your modem, dont warry about all the number around it, just turn it off

3- assign static LAN IP '192.168.1.1' with subnet '255.255.255.0' - also around the LAN area or on the config page, usually 2 numbers similar to those above

Router tasks
1- change router IP address to '192.168.1.2' - same as to above, under 'LAN settings' usually. if both the modem and WAP are one 192.168.1.1 it will cause MAJOR conflicts, make sure it is changed.
2- run the internet connection wizard (its in there)
3- set WEP encryption (i would advise 64-128 bit encryption with MAC restrictions) - under 'encryption' or 'WEP' put in a 4-character or 10-character password (you can do this last)
4- activate router's DHCP mechanism - under 'Lan' as usual, activate it and put the start and end addresses as '192.168.1.100' and '192.168.1.200' respectivly

computer tasks-
1- set WLAN settings to aquire an automatic IP address, but tell it to use DNS server of '192.168.1.1' as primary. - thats under network connections>Wireless connection>properties>TCP/IP>properties. youll see a whole bunch of numbers usually, check the boxes that say 'obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Use the following DNS server address'. put the number '192.168.1.1' in the box labelled 'Preferred DNS server address'. leave alternate blank.
2- connect to the WLAN network
3- test it.

from what i can see, the Modem and the router have the same IP address, thus they cant see each other. it would explain why it isnt working.
