thats high end? high end is around a good $400 (if you're thinking of an NVIDIA 6800)

I've recently come into the ownership of a Diamond Stealth s60 with Radeon 7000. Is that any good?Because I had to remove it since it messed up my graphics even worse on my games. I think it might have been conflictingwith my other card.

Atleast you have GOOD taste in chipset companies..Nvidia Kicks ass...i am against ATI since every card i have seen people have gets fried easily. I have had geforce cards since the GeForce 2, and upgraded them as i saw needed. the best i found was the TI-4600 but those are not made anymore...but the FX series is top end ****...UNLESS you want to pay what i did on day of release..499.99 for a 6800...oh yeah, NEVER get that gt crap...it is the same as ATI's SE junk....just junk. always get the straight 6600 or 6800 or whatever the card is named...stay away from special suffixs like SE or GT...its just a marketing gimmik..and sides that they usually are no better that the regular versions.

but for an AGP slot based Mobo, you nailed it with the FX..good choice!!!

Ummm.. Hmm, I'll have to hold my temper a bit...

I have had 4 Ati cards that have had no problem, i have, however, had 2 nvidia cards that have given me trouble... Any computer componet that comes off of the market has about a 15-30% failure rate. (So I've heard...). The ATI ones that you talk about could have been faulty, or from a bad retailer.

As for the marketing gimmik, yes that is often true. For ATI, the SE line stands for Sucky Edition. No doubt about that, however they are good for people that really don't need the full speeds as the normal core. The XT however, IS BETTER for gamers. Often adding 20~50MHz more on their cards. I have the 9600XT, it performs a lot better than the flat 9600.

Looking at newegg, for AGP, the 6600 only comes in the GT format. PCI-E it comes in both, however, the GT version is about twice as quick.... Hmm, phony sails gimmik??? I don't think so!


My next card will be a single 6800 Ultra (SLI capable, course), along with a new 64bit system. Unless I see ATI pull SLI out soon...

Folks, this thread wasn't created to debate video cards. Read the first post again. He was asking specifically about the geforce fx 5500 and if the price listed was was good or bad.

If someone wants to start a NEW thread discussing the merits/prices of other vid cards, feel free but let's try to keep on topic in threads, it makes it a heck of a lot easier to follow the discussion.

my dad has a Radeon 7000, i dont think it works well with anything

i already have and installed the 5500 and a stick of ram my old mx 400 card burnt up on me when some homework from my class requiered 1040x768 res that the old card could not handle course the old card only had 64 megs onboard memory, the new one has 256 most of my games have never looked better except FL it dosen't reconize it. i can't wait to try out n.f.s.u.2. it should kick, over all i paid $203.70 U.S. to keep this computer running the stick of ram alone solved most of its problems, like slow start up and skipping sound (onboard card), it runs almost like new
