Windows Update

I've been having problems with the 'automatic updates' on WinXP Pro of late, probably since i had them disabled for so long. Anyway, the machine is in the process of downloading SP2 right now (on dial up), but the only thing is, there is no way to pause the download while connected (so I can browse, post on TLR, etc). Also, when i do disconnect, the computer sits there and won't follow through on any commands for a good five or ten minutes (running @1.8 ghz). After any amount of update downloading the computer is terribly sluggish- also the download takes far longer to complete than it should; my next thought is to haul the machine over to my sis's house (she has DSL) and accomplish the 'update' there. I'm not sure how much of this is caused by the IE problem i've been having (see thread below in the forum) and how much is caused by the download. All restarting of the computer is followed by what windows calls a 'serious error.' So, in short, Automatic updates are being a pain. How do I at least pause them when online to let normal life continue???? Help!

It would probably be advisable to download SP2 from your sister's PC and the burn it to a CD. Remember that the larger a file is, andf the longer that it takes to download, the more likely it will become that the file in question may become corrupted. In addition, I would like to state that SP2 is not necessarily a beneficial upgrade, and should *only* be installed if you wish to improve your computer's security, and if you do not wish to use, or do not know how use a firewall.

You can also get SP2 on CD for free. Better that way.

But they have to *send* it to you. Do you really want MS to have your address?

Where do I sign up to have the evil empire mail it here?

you COULD tell it to mannually download the updates from the windows update site and tell it to ignore the unnessecary ones, if you on d/u half of them are unnessecary anyway and cuts your downloads in half aroundabout.
And i have personally had troubles with SP2 with Network access, ICS, and Remote Shutdown, so i dont use it on this computer (My other one has it however, as i use it on a network where people attack me constantly) because i rely on my other firewall for the 'cloak'

In short, MANUALLY download ONLY WHAT YOU NEED

i got a problem with those too.

the comp decided to download sp2, which my sister seemed to have agreed to while i was out...

and everytime i start up the comp, the com tells me the updates are ready for install. meaning the sp2. how do i like, tell the comp to ignore the sp2, or delete the sp2 from my drive?

Delete all files in the Temporary internet file directory for all users, temporary programs...
basically, delete anything that has 'temporary' slapped onto it. (use your discretion here, be careful, and be sure to put a system restore point before you do)

Or do a system restore to about a month ago and revoke admin priveleges for your sister

Wohoo! After a few hours connected to my sis's DSL line, SP2 is installed, 3 viruses removed from the system, and things are looking up!

Don't worry Esky, the worst they do is sit you down and make you play Halo with a bunch of jocks for fourteen hours. It can be painful but you can take it.

@ the topic: I just keep the SP2 Installation files on a disk around here somewhere in case I need to reinstall.
