I just had a scary experience...

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

I just had a scary experience...

Ok, i was playing starcraft a moment ago (With the expansion) and i decided to go for a different tactic to try and kill the enemy quicker.

I got a spawninmg pool up ASAP, with about 12 drones mining minerals and got a half-group of zerglings and sent it down, following up with 12 more lings after i got another hatchery.

wiped them out in 7 minutes.

I loaded the same map, and did the exact same thing again, took 11 minutes and i had to get hydralisk technology in (Vesphene gas, hydra den).

The third try took me a half hour and i had gotton transporters, hydras, guardians, and mutalisks all fighting at once. Took a half hour to kill it.

Now the fourth try... this is interesting, on the fourth try, using the same tactics, it killed me within 8 minutes.

now, originally, i thought it odd, as AI cannot adapt to player tactics.
Bear in mind i used the EXACT same rapid-attack strategy on all four games.
The seven minute one i thought was typical, as that is a common strategy on MP games for a quick win, but i found it odd that the computer then held me off for longer, when i was using the smae strategy! and again, until it finally managed to win.

Now, i couldn't think of any other explanation except that the game's AI was ADAPTING to my playing strategy.

I have heard a bit about the problems encountered with adaptation technology in games and AI and i was unaware that an AI of this level COULD adapt to my playing strategy.

opinions?

Couldn't it be that the Ai send different amouns of attackers the whole time?

Or maybe you getting tired? Or not concentrating as much?

being the best surviving RTS out there, i woudlnt' be suprised if the ability to adapt was one of the primary factors that kept starcraft alive. its one of those things where the old come back and bite you in the a55.

personally, i haven't played enough starcraft ( i got pwned one too many times for my liking ) so i dont know if it adapts to my pathetic lack of strategy.

What species did the AI play?

It was terran, i was zerg, the map was the two player 'challenger' map

*note to self, buy starcraft*

Are you trying to tell me that there is a game out there... with AI.... that adapts to your tactics.....! GLEE! I'm so sick and tired of these games where everyone just uses the same tactics. I want something that adapts like that.

starcraft is possibly the fastest paced rts out there. i hear that if you can win a 1v 7 melee against the comp (8 player map) you're really something. i can't even do a 1 v 1 properly.

You could be going crazy!

@kimk: by the time the AI's are finished with each other enough to pay any attention to you, theres probably ony about 5 left anyway, but thet is still a challenge...

@demon: maybe, ill have to try it on this comp and post replays
Yes, starcraft DOES have replays, it was added in the 1.08 patch, but they are not what i would call accurate, one replay i had showed a completely different scene to the one i played

sry to kill ur illusions, starcraft - just like any other RTS i know have NO "learning curve" in tactics.
the AI in all these games works with reactions based on actions.
sometimes you can see this very well.

attack an AI with an air unit - it will build anti-air defenses as a reaction.

what you prolly encountered are one of the many possible pre-programmed reaction patterns of starcraft.
these usually work with a bit randomness, some good premade decision-trees where you get the reaction for a specified action.
the AI isnt perfect - once you get to know it better - you can use it against himself.

there are also quite some situations that the AI cant handle very well.
mostly the special stuff in hte game - like surviving nukes, counter yamato guns, build a "good" defense against a rush an so on...

@arania, im talking melee, where 7 AI are teamed up against you. they do that. dont ask me how. i had a friend who could win 1 v 3 melee, when i had a sheepish army of 12 zealots he had already covered every inch of his 'allocated' base space with base defenses and barracks and stuff.
