auto mechanics

Hi again,

as you can see I got a lot of questions about a lot of things...Recently I got interested in cars and having no backround with mechanical stuff, I set out to search for a good site for beginner auto meachanics or car dummies (yea...that's me). If anyone can recommend a good site for people who know virtually nothing about what goes on under the bonnet (i think) of a car...well, I'm looking for a site with understandable descriptions and tutorials (you know, the reading material). Preferrably with pictures so I can see WHAT they're talking about...It helps to see what you're learning about.
It all started when I stumbled upon Club Cobra...for the first time in my life I got EXITED about cars...and I felt that it was time I learned about them. I don't want to be a professional mechanic...But it'd be nice if I knew what goes on inside cars...You know, be able to do my own things...Well, whatever auto enthusiasts do...you know, they like upgrading stuff, replacing parts, improving things...that sort of thing.
If anyone can also recommend a site with forums or chat where us dummies can go to, please post it here. Any other advice is welcome too.

I'm sorry I made things sound so vague...I don't know how to put it. It's really the first time that I want to do something so...technical. Please be patient with me!

Tuks, i hope the link below works.

The info on it is realy very basic and easy to understand but that seems to be what you are after.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/.

if you surf this site it will give you the answer on a generall and simple level to nearly any question, auto, computer, gardening, language....etc,etc,etc,

EDIT: if you like cobras you might enjoy this http://www.musclecarclub.com/main.shtml.

Druid

Thank you very much for those links! Sounds like you're a bit of a motor enthusiast yourself? What cars do you especially like and why specifically them? (If you don't mind my asking). The site where I stumbled upon cobras is here but it's not for beginners like me. The first time I saw one of those Cobras, I liked it AND I started getting interested in cars. It's been a while since then and I tried to find an appropriate search...well, I'm not that good at searches...

Anycase, try this link out and tell me what you think: link

no prob tuks, it's great to be helping someone around here for a change...it's usually me who's needs help

sorry i did'nt reply earlier, i'm real busy lately and i'll probably be limited to a couple of mins. a day for the forseeable future.

i see the merits in a motor site for ladys in particular because it would seem from the outside to be a "guy" thing and this would make it less daunting and more accessible. although i would say that just like TLR, if you show enthusiasm and interest i don't know many guys who would sneer or oppose your input regardless of race, creed, gender or other.

a lot of people often say they appreciate all kinds of music so long as it is done right...likewise my taste in cars is pretty much universal...so long as it's done right. excuse the list but this is just a sample of cars that spring to mind:

perfect garage next ot my border worlds Dagger and Sabre of course: 1966 Stingray Corvette in blue. 1968-69 Mustang a la Bullitt in Green. 1976-77 Firebird Black w/gold decals ---needs no introduction. 1970-72 De Tomossa Panthera. Any Dino Ferrari. Jag XK120 ( & Jag XJ series for daily drive ). 1960's "handclap" Lincoln Continental. AC Cobra Shelby blue w/ white stripe(of course). Aston Martin DB9. Merc 300 SL Gullwing must be silver. Bugaty Type 35. Lancia DB50. Ford GT40.....the list goes on.

Tx Druid,

your list of cars is interesting, although I have to admit I don't what all the cars look like - but have patience, I'm new at this. I'm not yet used to looking hours at cars or sth like that...Not much help around here either...

But tx for your input, if anything comes to mind, give me a ring.

hey tuks, i know the thread went quiet quickly but i don't think it's old enough to be considdered grave digging. i'd hate your first TLR car venture to pass that soon.

how are you getting on with that list anything there of interest or as one cadillac owning friend of mine says..."anything there float yer boat".

by the way, most of the american stuff i mentioned will be on the muscle car link i gave you. i love european style so even the american motors i like are of the more curved pencil lined (less boxy) genre but i also love the yank v8. the de tomaso is italian "de tomaso spa" and well worth a look. like the AC Cobra it is a european sports car with a ford V8. infact the panthera's predecessor the mangusta was given that name because that is the only animal which preys on cobras --- at the time of its inception de tomaso was fighting off a take over bid by cobra.

Driud

tx for your interest in this thread...even though I'm a beginner...that list's going to take me some time and I haven't been on the net as much as I used to...So gimme a chance to have a decent look.

Do you work on your car or prefer mechanics to? Do you know a lot about cars and their mechanics?

It's my wish to be able to "re-engineer" my cars someday... wishful thinking

Thank you for your support

i don't actually have a classic, infact, in a way i've got no car: sorry to dissappoint

i have a company car for work and i do that 6 days a week. i was goin' to buy a car this year but felt it would lay idle all week rotting in the cold, damp irish weather --- a waste really! by the time i have a day off i spend it with my wife, however she wants a red '70's 'vette so we are thinking of having one so to speak

i grew up with a passion for cars and i have worked in garages all my life in a sales capacity so i do have a lot of mechanical knowledge, however i would not know how to do my own repairs --- i just know when the mechanic is blowin' smoke up my rear. i'll come back with some links for cars on the list when i have a chance.

BTW: don't tell anyone else i'm a car salesman. i've kept it secret to date 'cause i reckon they might ban me, or worse still, rashion the supply of TLR ginger beerrs

@ Druid - You're a car salesman?!

I...I don't know what to say. On the one hand, all car salesmen are evil. But on the other hand, you're Irish, which automatically makes you cool, and you can philosophise. I'm so torn.

@code---imagine ending up in negotiations over the price of you paint job with a guy who has degrees in english and philosophy, is a qualified teacher, and a genuine 100% smart ass.
