Escape

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Escape

it might be down to the company i keep or perhaps i'm just too sensitive (big softie am i) but does anyone agree with this point?

watching telly for hours on end, reading cheap trashy novels, knokcing a little white ball up a field with a stick, are all normal and acceptable(ish) ways in which people relax and escape from everyday life. but when a grown man plays a computer game and visits an online forum where he can chill with people who share the common interest it's seen as slightly childish and odd.

nobody has actually said anything to me of late and i seriously doubt i'd care if they did, but i do notice a look people throw me when the find out i'd rather spend my time off work playing freelancer than playing golf. they seem to pause while waiting for me to explain my peculiar behaviour.

nah. mum thinks that too. but thats just too old fashioned. come the new generation they're the weirdos.

Good question
I was wondering about the same thing.
Maybe its because computer games and forums are seens as kids stuff, which it isnt.
I also get weird looks when people hear I spend my time at gaming and posting on forums and stuff. But thats their problem not mine

I know the feeling. I decided to go for a hike by myself in the Peak District the day after getting some snow. Despite finding my boots were no longer waterproof and half-freezing my feet I had a wonderful time. Convincing my friends that they really missed out that day was something else though! They didn't think it was normal to go off into the hills in the freezing cold by myself just for fun. But then they didn't see the views that day so I can't blame them.
I get similar looks if I tell my friends I spent the weekend mountain biking for miles rather than going out and getting drunk.
Don't worry, if you know you had fun, they don't need to be convinced.

I hope people notice the look I throw them when I find out they'd rather play golf than Freelancer.

Man, what a bunch of weirdos.

@ chief:

uber---oxford english dictionary (noun). derived from old norse "suber duber". meaning more than average, quite good really. black material made from a combination of latex, neoprene and formula X. a substance of unrivalled durability, resistant to extreme temperatures with the ability to enhance anatomy curvature and cart wheel performance. preffered protective clothing of marvel comic heroes --- ubermen ( unt uberwommin )

hey codename, there's something unnatural about you posting something i don't have to argue with on a philosophicl level.

ive played golf before and it was really boring, (no offence codename ) i mean really, you hit a ball into a hole.

Post Sun Dec 05, 2004 2:20 pm

Golf is a fun sport to watch, it teaches you different things, like how to take a straight piece of metal and bend it into different shapes, usually haver a hole is played, or the water hazard has caught the ball for you.

@spinnaker: i'm all on yur side there, but i think you had best read codes' last post again. there'll be no offence taken 'cause you are both sayin' the same thing.

i'm glad i'm not alone on this one. the paranoia has been under control ever since that session with Dr. Smershinboard and i was worried the voices in my head were not real

Everyone has their own method of escaping the routine of life. I play video games, my dad fishes, my mum reads, my brother goes out with mates.

Its unfair to brandish people "weird" because they do not do what you do to escape. I do not look at people who play golf or football or anything like that weird. If someone has a problem with it (which they never have apart from the "get out more" jibe) then it is there problem. And i do need to get out more.

There's nothing wrong with escapism. If I didn't have it, I'd be insane (more so) .

Post Sun Dec 05, 2004 3:19 pm

i find i can escape for a while when im doing photography.

Post Sun Dec 05, 2004 3:39 pm

That's kind of ironic, ff. Photography is often - if not always - about reflecting or revealing reality. So, in a way, you're escaping reality by experiencing it. Hmmmm...
