Movin'' on up...ADSL...Wooo Hooo!!!

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Movin'' on up...ADSL...Wooo Hooo!!!

Hey i've finally moved up to ADSL and to all those staunch 56k users out there that I sypathize with it's worth it for online gaming any way and just making the internet more user friendly.

If you search for a good deal you can actually save money by switch to DSL from dialup. Considering the fact that dialup charges you to use it. I paid $23 a month for dialup, i pay $27 a month for DSL. The performance alone would be worth the extra couple bucks, but since I get to use the internet for free...its like killing two birds with one stone

i currently pay $12.95 for 30 hrs a month dial-up (can we say ripoff)
soon to upgrade to $10.95 unlimited dial-up.
the only real downside to dial-up is it's speed when it comes to large files but the price is good considering what some *cough* companys charge

Welcome to the future!

Welcome to the second class of internet computing.

Had 56k, wanted DSL.... Got it.
Have DSL..... Wants OC-48.....Checks bank accounts, sees they're empty, cries....

Is OC 48 even offered for home use?

Post Sun Dec 05, 2004 6:41 am

If you are rich enough, you probably might be able to get it... Your system would have a hard time wrighting at 2.5 Gbps (i think thats how fast it is), that is if you could get your cable from the OC 48 line to your computer running that fast.... Talk about yeeehaw.

gets gleam in eye

Hosting a server with that... If only u havd a strong enough comp

Yeah there is a 2GB speed with 10GB bandwidth but currently, as a student that is far out of my finacial reach lol. I want to get it eventually though.....50 times faster than 56k!!!!

Haha the future rocks

I think you got your B (bytes) and b(bits) mixed up. The fastest is OC-48 at around 2.5 Giga-bits per second.

OC-48's theoretical bandwidth is 2.48Gbps, which makes it about 46000 Times Faster than 56k

Math

2.48Gbps *1024 Mbps/Gbps= 2539.52Mbps *1024 kbps/mbps=

2GBps (OC-48)= 2600468.48kbps
56kbps (dial up)= 56kbps

2600468.48kbps/56kbps= 46436.94

DSL opperating at lets say 786kbps is almost 15 times quicker than dial up.
Cable opperating at lets say 1.5 mbps, or 1536kbps, is about 28 times quicker.

You would have to go 2800kbps to be 50 times faster than dial up, 2.7mbps.

*head spins from complicated math* in any event thats fast how rich are we talking here?

Post Mon Dec 06, 2004 10:38 pm

A T1 line, opperating at around 1.5mbps, costs around $1000 /month ( I believe).

That is 1700 times slower than OC-48

isnt OC 48 a fiber-optic line? thats the stuff the government uses for their satellites and the like.

Post Wed Dec 08, 2004 12:08 am

OC-48 is used by large telephone companies for backbones of their network. I'm not sure what technology they are using, it could be fiber optic because of the lengths that it goes. Or it could be over regular copper wire, just a lot of wires...

CAT-5 goes 100 meters
Coaxial (TV Cable) goes 500 Meters
Fiber optics can go a great distance w/o attenuation (distortion of the signal.)

What they use to communicate with satelites is more than likely Radio frequencies.

Why am i suddenly reminded of Tesla's Wireless Power Supply?
anyway...
weclome to the next generation, while i must say (A/S)DSL* are quite quick, they can be temprametal at times, just look at my google ping records an hour ago... pinged at 2000-3000 about 15 times before cutting out completely, reconnecting, and then pinging at its regular 200.
Anyway:

Querey- OC-48
What are we talking here? speed double that of a CAT-6 gigabit cable? is there even a standard-issue computer CAPABLE of processing data at that bandwidth?
Then again, look at my school's DataServer setup, damn thing runs a RAID-5 array WITH Windows Server 2003, as a file server AND a backup Domain Controller, on (wait for it...) a... single.... PENTIUM 3 1.1GHz!!!!
but...
*drools*
2 GB/s ......
*drowns in own drool*

NOTE:
(A/S)DSL
Acronym: ADSL/SDSL/DSL
