Fractal Music - Software

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Fractal Music - Software

For many years I have been playing and experimenting with electronic music, strange scales or mathematical composing algorithms. Recently I heard about the software Gingerbread - The Mandelbrot Music Generator, published in the mid 90'ies. The latest version available is/was 2.0 (for W95 ...) but it is no longer supported by its author and no longer available because his home page is down (fractalmusician.com or organised chaos.com). I did quite a long research in the net finding a place to download the software but I failed.
Anybody can help me with a link ? Or does anybody have a copy ?
Thanks in advance.
I already found the software 'well tempered fractal 3.0' and "fmusic 1.9"
Do you have any experience with that software ?

hmm, a few years ago i wrote a small fractal generator (in C++) just for fun, it could paint Mandelbrot, Julia, and also others, (also these with ^3 and ^4 formulas), also could handle custom made ones where you could modify the foruma urself and play around...

I heard about other weird stuff like fractal compression,
BUT
eeerhm, music, ... now thats completely weirdo
how does that stuff sound? compareable to something where i "might" have a lil chance to know it? (im not into electronical music very much, but im curious about this stuff)

I am neither a mathematician nor a music pro. But it's obvious that (any) music consists of a great variety of parallel ('chords') and serial ('melody') patterns. Math and music are closer to each other than we might believe.
Almost all of these parameters (tune, rhythm, note length, attack etc. etc.) can be modified, either by the human player (lips, finger) or a machine (Flute, Synthesizer or whatever).
Fractals or other iterative process open a wide range of mathematically defined methods of alterating patterns. And these evolving patterns can be used to create or to change a melody, a rhythmic pattern, the colour of a sound and so on.
Of course, an "uncontrolled" machine produces a lot of crap. But the more "switches" for the iterative process you can control (by software e.g.) the better results you might get: somekind of flowing music slowly (or drastically) changing or even 'morphing'.

@ Fjord: (the one and only) Johann Sebastian Bach experimented with music-mathematical techniques, Terry Riley, Steve Reich or Phil Glass used iterative techniques in their 20-century-music; a lot of indigene African music can be described by iterative process. And Techno has elements in it.

interesting stuff, tnx for the links i'll check them when im back from work...
my experiances when playing around with custom fractal formulas were that very lil changes had a huge effect. (well, thats whats this is about after all )
i can imagine how this sound stuff works... similar to the graphical display - assign a tune to each "color" per pixel and "play" a "line" of pixels - or at least in a similar way.

as Spock would say: faszinating

another techno person!

That makes, what, three? It's a start, I guess.

This actually looks pretty cool. When I can I'll go check it out.

well, it turned out not to be my style of sound but it was an interesting thing to see that it actually works
i wonder when someone starts to make stuff like this in the more heavier style

Heh. That is cool. I wonder if fractal drumbeats are possible, and what they would sound like. Maybe I just need to explore more.

@fjord & codename: thanx for the feedback.
I had no time last WE to fiddle around with fractals (I had to take care of that angel visiting me - now THAT's a reason, isn't it?) .
If I might realize my idea about fractal drumming/percussion - e.g. let the fractals modify the groove patterns such as "humanizing" or filtering the sounds - i will send a short bit to you.
