Lag issues

Hey guys, I'm having a problem here.

Since I have alot of free time on hands the few upcoming days I decided that I want to practice my Counterstrike:Source skills. But there's where the weird stuff comes in: my ping is constantly higher than 300!! Sometimes it fluctuates (sp?) and goes back to 80/90 and the next minute it's sky-high again. (high when I'm dead and than it decreases while playing, although this doesn't happen very often. Plus, this is on a Dutch server!

My ADSL connection is good. below are some specs:
(test done @ Speedtest.nl
Download: 234.2 KByte/sec (=1874 kbps)
Upload: 41.1 KByte/sec (=329 kbps)
Connections to a Dutch server: 816.0 Conn/min
Pings from Dutch server to my computer: 12.0 ms

I did a full Spyware sweep, full Virusscan and I defragmentated my drives.
What can be wrong??!!

(A little side note: I only have this problem while playing CS (all versions), all other games work fine online)

So you have a lot of lag with the normal version of CS too? Are you playing on local servers, or distant servers? One thing I can suggest is that you try a LAN game and see if the ping is better, as that way we can determine whether or not it is a problem with your settings, or with the game itself.

One thing I should mention in that both CS:S and HL:S are very unpolished games, and suffer from a large number of problems. Some people will tell you that they are no better than beta releases, however I consider them alpha releases .

Check the ping repeatedly on steam before going on, i had a problem with it taking about 96% of my bandwidth idling, making most games unplayable.
It settled down once i got a B-Width limiter and gave it a good punisment.
Never played up since, it learned its lesson

Your firewall won't have an effect on ping times. It's more likely to be a hop between you and the server in question that is pining badly or worse giving packetloss.

So get an IP tracer and run a ping trace to the server while you do absolutely nothing online via your pc or anyone else on your lan for that matter. So stop all auto updating virus scanners/windows updates etc and then run something like http://winmtr.sourceforge.net/ but best to set it to scan every 5 seconds so you don't piss off the server admin and get your IP blocked.

Once you have run a trace for at least 10 minutes you will easily see if there is a routing problem, then can find out if its your ISP's routing or other. If it's your ISP then they can help, if it's not theres then you complain to who ever owns the router that is pining badly.
