Mass is multiplied by the speed of light. Order of operations does say you do the exponets first, however, I think in this case you multiply first...

simple maths people. the negative sign never gets squared. so it never becomes positive. as anything squared produces a positive number, c^2 x -ve number give a -ve number. hence energy becomes negative.
