Favorite Horror Movies

Now that halloween is almost upon us

What's everyone's favorite scary movie? (Yeah yeah...no "Scream" comments )

I don't really get scared by movies anymore, but there is one that always makes me cringe a little. Stephen King's "It." The first time I watched it I was like 8, and now clowns permanently freak me out... *shudder*

P.S. As a side note I'm looking forward to seeing "Saw." It should be a good gory flick from what I hear.

P.S.S. I know it's been a while since the movie came out but "The Village" was *NOT* scary. I'm boycotting Shyamalan forever

My favourites are:

The Shining - "here's Johny!" Superb film and the first time i saw it i was petrified.

Jacobs Ladder - "the only thing that burns in hell is the part of you that won't let go of your life" More of a thriller than a horror movie but since i saw it a few weeks back is now my most favourite film of all time.

The Blair Witch Project - Can't remember any quotes from this but the ending still sends a shiver down my spine.

Dark Water - Japanese film with subtitles. One of the scariest films ever.

The horror film i am most looking forward to at the moment is The Grudge with Sarah Michelle Geller.

Ahh...I remember Candyman! Haven't seen that one in ages.

As for Blair Witch... Haha, j/k It was alright, but I seriously did end up bored more times than interested.

Night of The Living Dead, I think is what it's called (the one with the black dude and the woman in the house).
Blair Witch project is sooo overated and boring.

It takes a lot to get me scared nowadays...uncomfortable maybe, but not scared. When I was a kid I was petrified by (and therefore loved) films like The Omen, The Thing, The Shining and Alien....but the scariest for me by far was the original black and white version of "The Haunting". I revelled in gore-fests such as Night of the Living Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween etc...but the thing that made "The Haunting" stand out for me was that you didn't see anything at all. I found it psychologically terrifying. Certain Hitchock films still make me shiver somewhat too.

So in no specific order, I'd say that my top 5 scary movies are :

The Haunting (60s original)
The Omen
The Shining
Alien
The Thing

Ringu (The Ring) this film terrifies me and I was paranoid about tellys for weeks after.
Ju-On (The Grudge) do not watch if you are remotely susceptible to suggestion!
Gaki Zoshi (Scroll of the Hungry Ghosts)(bben a long time since I saw this film)
Honogurai Mizu No Soko Kara (Dark Water) (ewwwww I didnt feel right after I saw this film and kept on drying up puddles of water on the kitchen worktops)
The Keep (cinematography/music/atmosphere and a superb performance by Gabriel Byrne as SS-Standartenfuhrer Kampfer)
Dust Devil (once seen, never forgotten)
The Shining (A Kubrick masterpiece)
The Thing (best sc-fi horror ever)
Eraserhead (possibly NOT really horror but puts the willies up me)(that's not an invitation Loc)
Born of Fire (beautifully evocative and weird)
Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan (Ghost Story in Tokaido)
Nosferatu the Vampire (original)
The Woman in Black (TV)(it scared me goddam witless especially in the nursery)
The Cabinet of Dr Cagliari (original)
Alien (none of the others although Aliens was good fun)
The Omen (none of the others although Omen 2 was ok)
The Eyes of Laura Mars (bloody good fun and Faye Goneaway's best performance)
The Haunting of Julia (very polished horror)
Brain Waves (weird rather than scary vbut intriguing)

and the monochrome original of the Haunting (thx grom)

Eraserhead (possibly NOT really horror but puts the willies up me)

I brought this a few weeks back taw. Can you explain to me what this was all about becuase i really didn't have a clue what the hell was going on. Much like i didn't in Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway, 2 other of David Lynch's films.

you don't want to know what I think Eraserhead is all about, and I can't type that much anyway.

try this linky

or ask Dave himself - good luck with this site! (and you thought Eraserhead was weird!)

a clue - everything is symobolic and you have to pay attention to absolutely everything

Hmmmmmm, to be honest, the 1992 Version of Dracula, is possibly the only real good Horror movie I ever saw, I just love it. I never ever bought any of that cheap Scream rip off stuff, or I know what you did last summer, I saw parts of em, and quite honestly, theyre a load of hooey, I mean come on, Barney the Purple Dinosaur is more scary then that

as for some cheap made but good anyhow movies I thought were Split-second with rutger Hauer, not that it had me **** me pants but it was just good on the Gore, I haven't seen Ringu (yes the original Japanese, me sis has it on DVD) but from what I heard from her its pretty scary (and my sis is quite up to scratch and can take quite alot), but from what ive heard, id be more then willing to see it.

The Rings is the scariest horror movie ever. I am seeing the Grudge this weekend though, its by the same director and its supposed to be 100 times scarier so that might be my favorite one.

Barney the Purple Dinosaur is pretty dam scary.

I agree that The Village was an utter dissapointment, i went with some friends expecting to be scared and there were barely 2 scenes that could even be called tense, i think that Signs was scarier(well not scary, but more tense) than The Village. As for my favorite horror movie... Im goin to have to go with Alien, If only because its sci-fi and horror, but i do find a lot of "horror movies" quite boring and/or completely stupid, so I don't watch many.

You can run, but run fast.... 1 shot is all I need.

@taw, I forgot about all of those! Especially The Eyes of Laura Mars and Dust Devil, 2 of my favourites.

And you're right about Barney, there's just something evil about him...

Post Thu Oct 28, 2004 12:59 pm

you forgot all about Dust Devil before until i reminded you. don't you think the moment Wendy climbs over the last sand dune and sees Bethany is one of the most visually bleak in cinema? the way the half buried houses look like skulls bleached in the desert sun? goddam it's a stunning film..
