A wierd Tech qestion

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

If you need to get a new computer, don't go for brand-name computers like Dell or Compaq. They're no good. See if you can get a computer built to YOUR exact specifications. Find a good computer shop, and tell them EXACTLY what you want. You pay, they do ALL the work and testing. I've had my computer for over 5 years, even though it's gone through numerous upgrades. But it has NEVER failed me. It's a custom-built machine, not pre-built schlock from Dell.

Unless I can remidy this one fast, I will be giving her my old one, A Compaq 1.53 ghz, 512 ram, 32mb vid ram. She runs no games, only IM and e-mail. It's 2 years or there abouts. It runs good with no problems on last using and had th dust blown out weekly.

@Fd.....

Having had to survive a D*llsaster and having had one that was just over 3 years old, take note that the disk controller on mine went through a slow but very damaging death. Trashed my optical drives and almost but not quite killed my HDD. Pretty much made a hash of all of my OS system files though.

Also, the disk controller is on the mobo and not worth replacing the mobo as it will cost over $400. Problem, then, of course, is that D*ll mobos and cases are non-standard so you can't just swap out the mobo. The standoffs do not match. Believe me, I tried.

<Edit>

Oh.... and in the beginning, my D*ll behaved similarly to your friend's.

Looked it over today, heat sink attached by two clips, semi in place. Does wiggle. The CPU fan has less than half an inch to the Power supply box. Little space for air flow, no box fans, only the fan on the pwer supply to move any air. Opinion, that it probally has already done the damage to the CPU. Verdict?, I hooke up my other one and got it going for her. 512 ram, shared for now, but will pick a low end card to get mem back. She does little graphics work/games. It should do her for now.

If you're not sure if the damage is already done, take it in to the nearest computer shop and have them test it for you. It shouldn't cost much. Some of them might even do it for free.

it might be possible, but with the smaller case, less air flow available, front intakes blocked by hard drive, and only a 1ghz, I'm not sure if its worth the cost. And, she does not have extra cash at the moment to spare. I might cough up the amount, if it was really worth it, but, the one I gave her, is a lot better and I still get support from Compaq via e-mail. They have always helped through problems.
