Rome: Total War

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Medievel is incrediable. You can charge thousands of men into a massive battle. It looks great, I can't wait to get Rome

I just played the RTW demo. I have never played any of the other Total War games, but I was totally blown away. There are literally thousands of men on the screen and everyone is charging and cutting people down (lol bad description but I'm really excited). I was actually laughing when my cavalry charged (akin to the many cavalry charges in the Return of the King movie) and took out a group of enemy infantry. I would say that if your computer can run it and you have any interest in strategy gaming you should get this game. For people that are worried about the interface I found it extremely intuative, of course I only played the RTS part of the game not the turn based part so I don't know how that is (from what I have heard it is on par with Civilization tho). Anyway the point is get this game!

Ecce Tawakalna nunc triumphat qui subegit Esquilax..

choose your ground and use the terrain to your advantage
don't dissipate your forces
make the enemy come to you
maintain your tactical advantage(s)
hold your line's cohesion even if withdrawing
outflank the enemy when his main force is engaged
don't be scared of elephants!

follow these rules on the RTW battlefield and you will overcome. the battle should be won before it's even fought IF you plan ahead carefully enough. check out the campaigns of Pompey, Caesar, Agrippa, Agricola, Julian, and Belisarius, they'll show you what you need to know. Especially Belisarius.

what were you trying to say there Taw? "Look Taw now triumphs...who conquers Esquilax" that is what it says right now :p

My smaller Carthaginian force made a mockery of that alleged Roman discipline. Of course, this only is the demo and I wasn't allowed to choose the Julian faction's force which outnumbered mine by about 450 men.

Those poeni and the sacred band heavy cavalry are wonderful units.

And those armored elephants made up for being outnumbered.

If you want to play as the Romans there's a little hack avaliable. Go here. Don't apply it more than once or it'll screw up the demo, and once you put the hack on you can't play as the Carthiginians(spelling?) unless you reinstall the demo.

I had posted that in my original thread. I think the demo is much better as romans, more tactics needed I can win with the carthagians without even moving them, on easy.

don't play on easy! only girls play on easy, play on hard and earn your laurels. I don't play anything on easy, what's the point?

Post Sun Sep 26, 2004 1:25 am

I CAN WIN THE GAME ********WITHOUT EVEN MOVING********** THE CARTHAGIANS AROUND ON THE EASY SETTING...that means I can just turn the screen off and walk away and I'll still win. I never told anyone to play on easy...

..someones getting old...*note: joke*

I'm wondering whether or not I should wait until a "Gold Edition" comes out with the inevitable expansion pack added. But I do not know if I can wait that long!

"I never told anyone to play on easy..."

that's true, you didn't actually say that; I "assumed" that from a cursory glance at wot you did writ.

I sometimes play on easy if the plot is good and I'm curious about the story. Still, after that I usually feel the need to replay the game on harder levels.

you can win but can you keep the losses down that is the goal, I played the scenario a few different ways, I won every time but you can lose alot of men if you do things wrong.

you'll know when you've reached some sort of tactical par with the Roman generals when you can decisevely defeat the enemy with auxiliaries only and not even engage your legions, a la Mancetter.

I thought the main troop actual Roman soldiers led the charge downhill on the advancing Britons? Wasn't there a Roman cavalry too or were those guys just mercenaries as well?
