It is not uncommon to have Wolfie's situation occur when the software maker is more interested in gaining market share. Winzip is the big guy and WinRar wants to take it down. To do this, WinRar needs as broad a base of users as possible who will toot its horn. One way to do it is to allow extended use of its free download accidentally on purpose.
When they think they've established themselves enough, you can bet the latest and greatest release will have all of those little protective safeguards in fully functioning order.
