red moon

red moon

anyone seen this ?

i saw it today, arond 9:03 pm, GMT+8. the moon was bigger than usual, a shade of red. scarlet. not blood red. mum wouldn't turn the car around so i could get my camera from the house. it was amazing.

anyone care to explain this phenomenon? i myself will be looking up stuff.

It could be some atmospheric disturbances but I bet the wiev was cool! Lucky you.

IIRC it's caused when the moon is "behind" the Earth. Light from the sun gets refracted by our atmosphere and makes the moon appear red. Technical definition's to do with decreasing velocity and increasing wavelengths and stuff like that

ok dark i would have tried to be that impressive with info .. but i would have said .. that its normally light just bouncing off the planets atmosphere onto the moon how it gets red im not sure ... its like a defraction of colours and red is the only colour that we can pick up on that wavelength or something like that lol

I don't mean to be funny but I see a red moon a couple of times each year at least. Is that really the first time you've seen it kimk?
Each time I've seen it, it's low in the sky to the east.

it was pretty damn high in the sky... you really can't see the horizon where i live. theres hills on one side, some apartments on the other. im essentially in a valley of sorts.

Damn, I wish I could have seen it *sigh*. Ironically there was a blue moon last night (or so the Channel Ten news told me ).

Really? damn, now I have to check it out again and rent the dvd

Btw, I observed that the moon was red around 8pm tonight, but got progressively clearer. It was white again around 10pm (note: I live in Indonesia, relatively close to kimk - he lives in malaysia)
