@BB

Over here, the divides in technical underwriting tend to place more emhasis on casualty underwriting, versus property. And of course, there are the more specialized lines in environmental, employment practices, fidelity, fiduciary and other E&O covers. I don't know how active liability covers in the UK, you my well imagine that things are hopping over here, though . But in our terms, the top technical underwriting jobs go to the senior liability professionals.

Indy, your side of the insurance industry is clearly a lot more complex than my side. A technical underwriter over here on the motor side is between actuary and underwriter.

A technical underwriter has the overall authority as to what business is written although he/she doesn't rate the risk as such.

eg. Mr X phones and wants cover on a Porsche 911 fitted with a Nitrous System. NOS over here is a big no no. I can't quote of screen so i talk to underwriter at insurance company. They can't quote off screen so they take it to technical. Technical look at it and refer to guides by actuary. If the over all risk is acceptable, they tell the underwriter and they tell me.

Could you elaborate on your above post as well please I'm really interested on how things work your side

As you may well imagine, the emphasis in PC work here has been in the casualty area, mainly, and in the various forms of liability insurance in particular. Until recent events have shown the need for effective underwriting skill in the property market less emphasis had been placed on pushing careers of those in the property underwriting field.

Emphasis.... meaning insurance carriers and brokers alike paying more for those who were expert in liability lines of cover as opposed to property.

The divide remains today but the gap is narrowing. Moreover, because of the forms of 3rd party liability that businesses today must worry about, there are many specialized lines of cover here:

Environmental, fiduciary, employment pracitices, etc., in addition to the usual errors and omissions type coverage provided to doctors, lawyers, accountants, directors and officers, etc.

Commercial general liability (public liability?) is just one aspect of this field in the casualty marketplace. It is the main line, of course, but it is far from being the total package now needed to do business prudently in the US.

Thanks indy

That sounds like some real nice complex stuff

Thanks to the rest of you to. I will be going in on Tuesday and asking about those qualifications. I've been considering my position for a while but needed other opinions before i did anything.

Thanks
