underground advertisement

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

underground advertisement

Anyone heard of such thing? I recently saw a report on the stuff on TV, and it got me totally annoyed. According to the story, there is a company (in the US, I believe) that organizes advertizing campaigns for different firms. They are employing so-called virus advertisement, i.e. it's based on rumors - no official ads. A few examples - they hire random people who roam around pubs, discos, etc, striking conversations and casually statong that, according to some friends of theirs, certain stuff is super cool (for instance, a drink or a certain brand of cigarettes). Alternatively, they are offering a drink (all the same brand), or asking for a light, and then inquiring whether the person has tried certain super cool cigarettes. This is done on a wide scale - i.e. they have a whole team working at the same location and trying to attract as many ppl as possible. However, the crappiest thing was that they also hire people to sit in MIRC or forums pretending to be strangers and striking conversations about movies, games, etc. - whatever they're advertising. E.g. "have you seen this film" "yeah, it's awesome! Gonna see it again". "Yep, me too, about the best thing I've ever seen", etc. This usually applies to second-rate stuff that usually nobody would pay attention to.
This whole thing is oriented towards teenagers and ppl around their twenties, but you never know.
The morale: trust noone - if sb says sth is good, they might be paid to to say so. *thinks about different treads on TLR*

Everything old is new again. Once upon a time, before the printed or broadcast add, the only way to publicize your product, lies and all, was by word of mouth. NOW.......

"Underground advertising." What a laugh. This is the same thing as, in politics, the whisper campaigns. You start nasty rumors about the opposing candidate. Like, er, she's a husband beater or something. Only this time you do the reverse to talk up what you want to promote.

You have to hire the "right" looking people to pull this off, though, AND the right kind of product.

I don't see what the fuss is? So what?? I think its a pretty good idea really - if you're stupid enough to try something because a complete stranger says its cool, then you deserve to be fooled.

Word of Mouth always has been, and always will be, the best way to advertise.

indeed it is.

i always avoid places that spread their name far and wide.. i follow the general rule of.. amount of capital spent on public advertising is inversely proportional to actual quality of product.

Agreed. However, if you don't know the product and everyone around you seem to agree that it's good stuff. I dunno, I don't think that only complete fools fall for it. To think of it, any of us could have already been subjects of this even without noticing it.

Thing is, I believe that this is a matter of peer pressure. Do you cave or don't you? Granted, most people do at some point, but that doesn't make it a bad way to advertise - just a very very clever one. They're using our weaknesses against us.

Its like the age old "parent to child" question - "if bobby were to put his hand in the fire, would you do it too?"

Found it. Those "plants" are known as "shills" in the confidence game.

Forgot to add - you see, concerning the MIRC thing, most hired people are kids, and they're talking to kids, while others just pretend to be young. I don't think it's right. I could only blame myself if i'm tricked into buying lousy stuff this way, but if it's my kid... Dunno, I'd be mad as heck and looking forward to screwing some heads off

That does put a different perspective on things, I agree.

First, the non-kids that are able to pretend to be kids and pull it off is just too
creepy for words. That kind of thing is just too close to the line with adult
predators of children in general.

The second category sounds both evil and stupid and the same time. I assume the kids that they recruit are being paid? How do they decide whom to hire and whom not to hire? Do they go into schools and find out who the "cool" kids are?

From whom? Are the schools aiding and abetting these guys? If they are, that's the soft underbelly of this monster to attack. They have no business giving or selling names of kids for the purpose of commercial exploitation.

Aye, there are reports that there are people (women mainly) who hang around in bars, and get men to buy them a specific type of drink. For every bottle the men buy, the women get a commission. That's what you get for being friendly I guess .

Hmm I need some money

Post Wed Aug 18, 2004 10:33 am

that's an old old trick, Ed. got caught out with that one myself when I was still wet behind the ears (over two decades ago!) now i just grunt "s*d off" at them or call them parasites, usually gets rid.

sw, I'm sure you wouldn't demean yourself like that.

True; it's another form of prostitution, as you are selling your credibility for money.

Now we're goint OT in OT, but I kinda like that. There's a number of local chicks who go to Japan to work like that, i.e. sit in bars and strike conversations with strangers teasing them into buying more drinks&food and thus earning their share. No sex is involved, but I don't think it's a good thing.

@Taw.

Old trick? With adults of course. But Zlo mentioned that they're doing it with kids and at kids ( assume under 18 by a few years ).

THAT, for me is a whole new world of objectionable behavior.
