KAIST < anyone heard of it?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

KAIST < anyone heard of it?

supposedly a top korean science & technology university

KAIST

can anyone offer opinions on this uni? my dad's very obviously forcing me to go there. if what he says rings true (he doesn't have a very good track record of that though), the uni only takes the single very best from each highschool around s. korea, and even then, not all the high schools have a eligible KAIST candidate all the time.

and yeah, i think im gonna stick to sciences, perhaps physics.
btw if anyone was interested, exchange rate is 1 USD to 1267 korean won.
about KAIST > goals will show you they're shooting for 39billion USD in budget by 2010. iirc that surpasses the nasa budget by 5 times.

anyways, i really want to know im not stepping into another pile of dog**** like i did before. its got a nobel prize winner for quantum physics as the president. some europe/american dude.

anyways, any and all opinions would be nice. this is some 5 years of my future we're talking.

also, anyone got any opinions on nottingham university? based off england? in a chart it came 8th in england's top uni's.. as i've come to realise statistics dont show everything, im asking you guys. iirc rec is applying there.

What is the first programming language you learn when studying computer science? Profanity

Don't know much about it Kim.

But it looks like you could be doing a lot worse than KAIST.

im serious guys, i would like some serious opinions. i might just end up spending 5 years there. higher suicide rates than anywhere else in korea.

I'd like to provide some useful input, but I know nothing about the institution in question. Sorry .

@Kim

All I meant was that, by reputation at least, the place appears to be highly regarded as far as scholastic standards are concerned.

Since we really don't know you and how well suited you may be to a place, it is hard to say whether you'd like it there.

What are you, personally, looking for? We don't even know that.

i dont know what im looking for. im not an arts/humanities student, thats all i know. the rest? i can handle just about anything, hate to brag, but yeah. i think im looking into physics, anything that will let me get a good job.

Reguardless of the school, it greatly depends on your field of study and your seriousness toward that study. If it is a good school in teaching ability, then you can gain a lot, if a minor in quality, then you will gain less, but you can still learn a great deal.

@Kim,

Looking to hard science just to get a good paying job might not make your study at KAIST very pleasant. From what I can tell, it is a pretty rigorous school. Schools like that tend to make it rather miserable for those who do not live and breathe the subjects being studied.

What's this about suicides you mentioned?

Post Sat Aug 07, 2004 5:53 pm

well ther's apparently suicide cases there. students who can't cope. and i really dont know what field i'll live and breathe in. i really dont.

@Kim,

It is very tough to be in that situation. But you actually are going to have to choose something now if you want to give yourself a shot at going to a suitable school. If you don't you're going to have a tough time not going to KAIST (assuming that you get accepted and something tells me you would ).

I take it that your father wants you to excel at whatever you do and wants to make sure that you get your education at the best available school. He probably also thinks that not being in the ROK has made you soft so that going to a school like KAIST will toughen you up as well as give you a shot at getting the best education available for you.

It is possible that your not knowing what you want to do is partly in reaction to that kind of pressure. Because deep inside, you do not want to disappoint your father and, for yourself, you don't want to fail. Your Dad probably figures that while you are trying to figure out what you want to be, you may as well be beating your brains out at the best place for science that he knows.

Nobody wants to fail but I get the sense that in your case, it is something that, for your Dad would be totally unacceptable and unforgiveable, at least that's what you believe.

You not an Arts/Humanities student? Oh well, you'll miss out on all of the good jobs; like mine!

Post Sun Aug 08, 2004 2:42 am

hes like a drill sergeant my dad. if i get stuck there all ill see is books.

and heres a question you guys might be able to answer.

what do you guys think about nottingham uni ? its supposedly an england uni with a branch here in m'sia.

You say you want a good job? I assume that you mean one that pays well. If that's the case then you'll need to get into some sort of professional program (Law, Medicine, Dentistry) or you'll need to get an MBA. Any one of those will be plenty hard enough as it is. There's no sense in burning out whilst trying to get a BS in the hardest possible subject field.

If income potential isn't your main criterion when it comes to career seeking then disregard my post.
