Technical Difficulties

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Technical Difficulties

this is to all the techy people.

I've been having trouble lately, where my comp freezes when playing a fullscreen game.
What happens is:
I'm playing normally (freelancer, SoF2, ZDoom even!) and the screen locks and and the sound stutters and i cant do anything like alt+tab or ctl+alt+del.
Can anyone help me?

Im running:
P3 800
nVidia GeForce 2 MX/MX 400
512 MB RAM
10GB free on main HDD
Windows XP (no service packs)

PS: I might actually install the SP for XP. might get rid of the bugs.

Try updating your drivers and for gods sake buy a new vid card. A GF 2 MX400 is by no means a mustard cutter, even with older jobbies like SOF2 and FL.

Get a better hard drive, graphics and processor. Keep up with the times! You can get a P4 2.6 Ghz for £120 these days!

Also install the SP for XP, it solves alot of security holes like the MS Blaster.

Could be a heat issue; check your CPU and GPU temps.

Its almost like the problem I had on an older computer tring to run Tachion, beyond the fring(sp). My card did not have enough mem, so when the screen was busy, lots of activity, it would freeze for a few second, around 15, then move a small amount. The audio continued uniterupted. I had to reduce some of the effects at that time till I got a bigger card.

final, sheesh your spelling is astrocious (sp?)..

anyways, i'm on a 1.7ghz p4 gf2 mx400 too. i'm not into any games that'll take more than that. in fact i'm going backwards these days...

as for your problem, try and take out as many background progs as you can to free up ram. set it to low for effects and er...

actually, if the stuff used to work, i'd suggest a defrag. if problem persists, reinstall. if the problem still doesn't go away, format your comp. thats my problem fixing drill.

Your memory's fine, but you need a new video card. And a cpu updgrade. But it sounds to me like you're having problems with an overheating cpu. I had this problem a few weeks ago. Most likely, you're cpu's heatsink and fan is kaput. I had that replaced and my computer started working like a charm again. I'd get that checked out if I were you. Like Esky said, check your cpu temps because that could be the problem.

kimk, when my spelling is worse, it means I'm at work and don't have access to my spellchecker that I use at home. Too much trouble to open word and copy & Paste it all back and forth just to spell check.

A freind of mine runs Freelancer on a PCI TNT2 32MB card with the latest drivers. No joke.

Anyways, install SP1 for XP, update your video AND sound drivers. That 800Mhz P3 isn't helping, but it IS adequate - I've played on a 16-player server that was running a 600Mhz Celeron without too much diffculty.

Take apart your case and have a look inside. Clean it out with a can of air duster and a vacuum cleaner (take the job to someone else if you've never seen the inside of a PC before) if it looks dirty. Check your CPU heatsink and fan, make sure they're on tigtly and the fan is spinning freely. Give the fan/heatsink a few short blast with the air duster if it's dirty - you won't hut anything.

Ahem, just remember people, that an upgrade is great but it is not always necessary. Also, many people can't afford it. Therefore, don't be so quick to say "get a new card" (even if they do have a a stinkin' "MX" series card ).

I might do some spring cleaning on the interior... wont hurt anyway.

(This also gives me an exscuse to bug my parents for a new processor)

It was a heat prob, thanks esky for the tip, all i did was take off the sides and point a fan at the box and turned it on high.

And for those bagging my vid card: I have a limited budget, and i would still be using a TNT2 if it hadn't been installed improperly. The 2 hard drives i have equal upto 100GB of space total, and most of it is consumed by my various projects (music, 3d, fl) and all i need to do is just back these up to get more space. And my computer still runs the latest games (I was playing Halo yesterday in fact) so why should i abandon it? The min specs for HL2 are a 700 MHz processor. and mines above it. so leave my beastie alone. by computer may be a b****, but its MY b****.

No problem. You should really throw in some more case fans if you can Vi. They aren't very expensive at all.

*Basks in warm glow of self-satisfaction*

Well, problem solved. You should probably stay on Wiz's goodf side and ask for a *click*, Vi .

Your wish is my command and replace that vid card! Even a budget $100 card would out strip that thing 4 times over. I know how well SOF2 runs on a PIII800 and a GF3 so give me that malarkey that it runs good on a an 800 and a GF2, cause I know it doesn't. Anyway *click*
